EL SEGUNDO HERALD March 3, 2016 Page 13 Don Brann from page 3 Drew Boyles from page 3 and increase Planning Department personnel to expedite project turnaround. “Public safety has become the hot-button topic,” Brann said. “It wasn’t to that extent eight years ago.” Born in Los Angeles just before the end of World War II, Brann settled in Hawthorne in 1953 and began a 60-plus-year connection with the Wiseburn School District. He graduated from Hawthorne High in 1963 and became the first in his family to attend college when he enrolled at El Camino where he earned his AA degree. After obtaining his Bachelor’s at the USC School of Business, Brann went to Cal State LA for a Master’s in Elementary Education. He then returned to USC to complete his doctorate in Administration. Brann’s relationship with El Segundo began in 1970 when the then-25-year-old landed his first teaching job with the fourth grade class at Center Street Elementary School. Four years later, he and his wife Sari (high school sweethearts now together for over a half-century who went on to raise two daughters who followed in their father’s footsteps by embarking on academic careers) bought a house on California Street. “It was and continues to be a joy to live in El Segundo and Sari and I are proud to call this community our home,” Brann said. A mass layoff of teachers in 1979 (those who hadn’t worked in the district for at least 13 years had to leave) ended Brann’s time at Center Street and he moved on to the Antelope Valley where at 34 became the state’s youngest school superintendent. He eventually made his way back home in 1993 when he took the helm of his childhood district, Wiseburn. Brann said he is most proud of adopting a balanced budget every year, passing multiple school bonds to modernize district campuses, and spearheading the initial effort that ultimately resulted in Wiseburn’s long-desired unification in 2014. On the education side, he received recognition as one of the Top 100 School Executives in North America in 1985, PTA –Very Special Person (VSP) Award in 1995, School Superintendent of the Year in 2005, and most recently Pepperdine University’s Superintendent of the Year honors in 2014. He also established the California Small School Districts’ Association in 1983, was Vice President of the Cosca Group that recruited and placed superintendents across California, and founded the Da Vinci charter schools in 2008. He also managed to sandwich in the Dave Jones Outstanding Citizen Award in 2007, and Chamber of Commerce Public Service Award in 2008. As for community involvement, Brann was the former Committee Chair for the LAX Master Plan Advisory Commission and Chair of Broadway in the Park. He was a member of the El Segundo Cable TV Committee, Capital Improvement Project Advisory Committee (CIPAC), Chevron Community Advisory Committee, El Segundo Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, and Camp Eucalyptus Advisory Committee that oversaw that facility’s redesign. Additional volunteer activities include current work on behalf of the Library’s History Committee and Tree Musketeers. “I joined these groups in an effort to give back to my community— and the opportunity to once again serve on the City Council continues my ongoing quest to honor and enhance our city,” he said. • and retention. He said he is especially proud of the inroads the recently revamped group has made during his tenure, with revised bylaws and an influx of new members representing various local sectors. Boyles’ other community involvement includes membership in the El Segundo Kiwanis Club, a board slot with the El Segundo Museum of Art (ESMoA), a role as presenter for Character Counts at the Center Street School, and stints as a coach and commissioner for local AYSO soccer. He also operates several businesses in town, most recently establishing HazAwayToday. com (a household hazardous waste removal outfit) in 2014. He became a franchisee of You Move Me (a moving company) in 2013 and 1-800-GOT-JUNK? in 2004. In the Los Angeles area, Boyles is also Regional Director of the Entrepreneurs’ Organization (EO) overseeing 1,200 members and 15 chapters, as well as a member and former Co-Chair of the Malibu/Santa Monica Surfrider Foundation. An avid surfer who has scaled the waters in 15 different countries, Boyles found himself unexpectedly assisting with rescue efforts for the passengers from a sinking ship off of the coast of Indonesia last summer. And despite travels to many exotic locales, he emphasized that his favorite journey ever was a routine business trip to Seattle in the late ‘90s where he met his wife of now 16 years, Lee. “She was a flight attendant and still is,” he said. Boyles also enjoys skiing and snowboarding and was quick to point out that he was part of a breakdancing group in high school. “I have been known to occasionally still bust a move.” When he was just 17, Boyles joined the US Navy and recalled that his parents had to sign his enlistment papers. He worked on the F-14 aircraft and trained at NAS Miramar in San Diego County. Over his four years of shore duty, he managed to avoid setting foot on a ship. After finishing service with an honorable discharge, Boyles went to school full time and earned a degree in Aviation Management from Southern Illinois University in 1994. He followed that with an MBA in Finance from USC in 1999. While still in Illinois, he also went to work for the Brunswick Corporation and became the youngest general manager (at 23) in the history of the company. After college, he moved on to Starbucks for six years and managed 13 locations with $14.9 million in annual revenues and nearly 200 employees. “I opened 19 new stores and one remote market and also turned a challenging, post-acquisition, urban-market district around to first-time profitability,” he said. Next up were a couple of two-year stints as an executive for Andersen Business Consulting and head of operations for a dry cleaning start-up. When the opportunity with 1-800-GOT-JUNK? arose, Boyles felt his prior business experiences would ultimately paid dividends. “The difference is I have employees, I sign paychecks and have to personally guarantee my property,” he said. “As an entrepreneur, I create jobs and excel in analyzing, solving and implementing solutions to complex organizational challenges. I feel I can translate those skills to the El Segundo City Council.” • Visit us online: www.heraldpublications.com dba@heraldpublications.com public notices legalnotices@heraldpublications.com PUBLISH YOUR PUBLIC NOTICES HERE ABANDONMENTS: $125.00 ABC NOTICES: $125.00 DBA (Fictitious Business Name): $75.00 NAME CHANGE: $125.00 Other type of notice?
