EL SEGUNDO HERALD September 1, 2016 Page 9 Eagles from page 5 counted on defense.  New to the sport is former football star Cameron Dornblaser. Dornblaser’s water polo lineage goes back to the 1952 Olympics when his grand father played for the U.S. and his father played for the Eagles in the 70s. He brings a strong arm and a great deal of athleticism to the team and program. Newcomers Danny Gonzalez, Tyler Ralls, and Aleksander Niscavic round out a great freshman class.  You can catch the Eagles in action at their season home opener on Wednesday, Sept. 14, at 3 p.m. Football Team Impressive in Scrimmage This could be an interesting season for the Eagles. With an experienced team, expectations are running high especially since they did so well against perennial powerhouse West Torrance in a scrimmage. Head coach Steve Shevlin said both offense and defensive units played great. He said both quarterbacks Kelly Reynolds is a returning starter and will help lead the team as this year’s captain. Nolan Young will be one of the team’s top defenders but has a great outside shot too on offense. Kyle Crist is a returning starter who could be one of the area’s top juniors. One player who could make an impact is just a freshman. 9th grader, Owen Hale has a tremendous amount of experience playing on club teams. Hale brings speed, outside shooting, as well as the ability to play the center-defense position. With his talent, Hale has the opportunity to be the first freshman starter the program has had in at least 10 years.   Of course the reason any program is successful is because of their feeder team. In this case, the JV team should prove to be a good one and prepare these players for the next level. A great incoming freshman class includes a number of players that have a wealth of club water polo experience. Kalan Smith brings a strong left-handed shot and the ability to play the center position as well as guarding the center position on defense. Caden Kastigar looks to be another in a long line of great goalies the Eagles have had. His potential is so high that he could be promoted to the varsity if needed. He has demonstrated the ability to anchor the defense in the goal. His twin brother Cavin will be able to contribute on offense and has a strong overall offensive game.  Sophomores Kyle Delmendo should be a pesky defender and hopes to play a leadership role on the JV team.  Baron Young brings tremendous swimming speed to the team and will be Kobee Lagarde and Jake Palmer ran the offense without any issues. At this point it looks as if both will be splitting time under center. Haamid Brooks Jr. and CJ Shevlin both caught several passes while running back Taz Tauaese looked in mid season form and broke off several big runs. Ashton Saltz was another running back that impressed. On defense, defensive lineman Duncan Papalii was almost unstoppable getting to the quarterback on pass plays. The trio of linebackers including Mark Binder, Billy Brasher and Angelo Pacheco were defensive stalwarts. The season starts Friday night when the Eagles host Leuzinger at 7 p.m. The Olympians are picked to win the Pioneer League this season and have a transfer quarterback who has been highly recruited. With El Segundo’s experience on defense and an explosive offense this should be a great test for both teams. • “This year’s team faces an uphill battle as the result of the new seeding format pushed the Eagles up from Division 4 to Division 2.” 16TH ANNUAL SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 10 EL SEGUNDO FIREFIGHTERS’ PANCAKE BREAKFAST “SUPPORT YOUR COMMUNITY” FIRE STATION 1 314 MAIN STREET 8AM - 11AM • all proceeds to local charities • paid for by the El Segundo Fireϔighters’ Association •
