Page 2 July 9, 2015 Hawthorne Happenings News for the ‘City of Good Neighbors’ From City Clerk Norb Huber Fireworks, fireworks and more fireworks How many M80’s and skyrockets have to be shot off to really celebrate our nation’s birthday? Or is it a competition to see who can shoot off the most? I’m sure if you were in town last weekend, you know exactly what I’m talking about. When a great number of residents are breaking the law and firing illegal fireworks up into the air, it is impossible for law enforcement to do much about it. It’s similar to illegal drugs, unless the supply of black market fireworks is cut off, the “war zone atmosphere” surrounding Hawthorne’s 4th of July will continue annually. My mother-in-law who lived through the beginnings of World War II in Germany commented that the bombs exploding over her house last Saturday night reminded her of her horrors seventy years ago. I have a feeling that some people had a few too many “cold ones” during their day of barbeques and block parties which led to them to feeling no pain when lighting up blaster after big boomer. World Special Olympics Thanks to the generosity of Hawthorne businesses, the cost of being a host city for the upcoming World Special Olympics has been mostly covered. We will host 100 special athletes from two different countries. They will be staying in our local hotels, being treated to special dinners, working out at local venues and participating in some events while they are here the last week of July. These athletes are serious about the competition and winning is everything to them. It’s great the city of Hawthorne has stepped forward to help out a worthy cause. Movies in the Par Saturday, July 11th The Holly Park Homeowners Association once again invites you to their annual “Movies in the Park” event to be held this Saturday, July 11 at Holly Park, which is located at 120th Street and Van Ness Blvd. on the east side of town. Go for the food and games prior to the feature movie that is shown on a big screen out on the baseball field. Bring a chair and/or blanket. Every year there is a large crowd of young and old folk like me. Hall of Fame Banquet Friday, July 17th The second annual Hawthorne Historical Hall of Fame Banquet will be held on Friday, July 17 starting with a social hour at 6 p.m. This year the banquet will be over at the Memorial Center’s Venus Room. Tickets are $30 per person and can be obtained by emailing hawthornehistorical@ gmail.com or in person at the Hawthorne Museum. The 2015 Hall of Fame inductees include: The Hawthorne Beach Boys, Reese Walton, Jim Thorpe, Carl Boenish, and Seers Lumber. Good Neighbors Day Saturday, July 18th It’s hard to believe that this will be our 5th Annual Good Neighbors Day. It will be held on Saturday, July 18th in front of City Hall on 126th Street. The activities include a car show, three great bands performing on stage, vendors from a variety of organizations, and some food and games. If you would like to be a vendor, please email me and we will include you. The cost of being a vendor is $25. Politically Correct? Interesting times we are living through these days. Just in the past few weeks, we have seen an Olympic champion male be praised for his courage after changing his gender. We have heard Donald Trump insult pretty much the entire population of Southern California. The highest court in the land has overruled the majority vote of the populace by legalizing the marriage of any two human beings regardless of gender. Finally, the Confederate flag has become the symbol of racism. How do we handle all of this? How do I handle these changing times? I turn to my spiritual faith. Sin has been part of all of us since Adam and Eve. We all do wrong. I’m just as bad as the next guy. We know that there will always be conflict and hatred and pride and arrogance. Because I live in America, I can believe the way I want. I may lack “politically correctness”, but I place my trust in an even higher being than the supreme court. Just as God loves us all, I try to love and respect all, but I just can’t go see myself becoming Norma instead of Norbert. I think it’s time for a “cold one”! Nelson Tracey for CINEMACY A great argument in favor of nonfiction storytelling is that often times the truth is  even stranger than anything conjured in fiction. Sundance alum Cartel Land, executive produced by Kathryn Bigelow (The Hurt Locker, Zero Dark Thirty), is one such documentary as it follows two different sides of the undeniably crooked war on drugs in Mexico. The film’s first few minutes show images and situations that seem unbelievable; a mass funeral for an entire group of innocent people who were murdered by the elusive cartels is a harsh reality check of the casualties of this endless war. This also serves as a signal to the audience that we are in for an education unlike anything we knew before. The cartels are  introduced as powerful outsiders and are seldom shown onscreen. Instead, the focus of  the film will be on groups of people who are taking matters into their own hands: when the government can’t protect the people, who will? We get two different answers from both sides of the US-Mexico border. The first is an American vigilante border patrol organization called Arizona Border Recon, who is full of bigotry and misguided law. Their leader Tim Foley, known as “Nailer,” is hardly a representation of good morals, yet is the tamest in this terrifyingly bloodthirsty group of American self-proclaimed soldiers.  On the Mexican side (though over 1,000 miles from the border, deep into its own country of  Michoacán) is an anti-cartel volunteer group known as the Autodefensas, led by a charismatic, spirited leader named Jose Manuel Mireles, or “El Doctor.” The Autodefensas start out as a  small uprising of citizens who know that they can’t rely on the police to stop the cartels,  so they take matters into their own hands. As we watch the organization expand and gain power, inevitably it becomes more difficult to maintain and corruption naturally cracks into all levels. The reason these stories are so compelling is because of the level of access that director Matthew Heineman has gained. Many documentaries lose attention when the most dramatic moments are happening off-screen. Heineman has miraculously managed  to be right alongside numerous firefights, protests, and intimate conversations that immerse the viewer into the tense situation at hand. The primary characters are shown onscreen without us being told who is trustworthy and who isn’t, and as we see more information, it becomes even clearer how impossible it is to trust anyone involved in this situation. By the time the film is over, you will have a new understanding of just how deep-seated the corruption in these wars has become. What is more baffling, and another reason why this is essential viewing, is that these stories (like many of global importance) are being ignored by mainstream media in all likelihood because of how unbelievable they are.  Cartel Land  is a movie that inspires the viewer to think a little more carefully about what  types of leaders are trustworthy, and exposes a horrific truth with humane precision that  would otherwise by brushed over by mainstream media. Cartel Land opens this Friday, July 10th at The ArcLight Hollywood. For our interview with director Matthew Heineman, visit www. CINEMACY.com. • Tim “Nailer” Foley in Cartel Land.
