Page 2 March 2, 2017 Zela Davis Elementary Named California’s LAUNCH School of the Year by Project Lead the Way (PLTW) Content Provided by the Hawthorne School District The Hawthorne School District is pleased to announce that Zela Davis Elementary School has been selected by Project Lead the Way (PLTW) as California’s LAUNCH School of the Year. This prestigious award, the first of its kind to be bestowed by PLTW, was presented to Zela Davis staff at the annual California PLTW Conference in Riverside on January 24. The conference drew attendees from across California and neighboring states and the school was recognized in front of an audience of over one thousand PLTW teachers and program advocates. PLTW is a nationally-renowned not-for-profit organization that partners with schools and districts to provide high-quality programming in the areas of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). PLTW operates in all 50 states, serving over 2.4 million students and working with over 35,000 teachers. LAUNCH represents the elementary component of PLTW’s comprehensive K-12 curriculum. Through a partnership with Chevron Products Corporation and El Camino Community College, the Hawthorne School District began implementing PLTW at Bud Carson Middle School in 2012, when the school began utilizing the program as part of its conversion to a STEM academy. A BCMS teacher, Janet Andrade, was named California’s PLTW Teacher of the Year for 2012-2013. Zela Davis began implementing the PLTW program in 2015, with students from kindergarten through fifth grade engaging in activities such as coding, robotics, and various forms of scientific inquiry and exploration. Since bringing PLTW to Zela Davis, Principal Kathy Carbajal has noticed significant changes in the actions and attitudes of her over 1,200 students. “At the elementary level, our goal is to create curiosity and spark interest in science, technology, engineering, and math,” Classifieds The deadline for Classified Ad submission and payment is Noon on Tuesday to appear in Thursday’s paper.
