May Hit Limits on Local Streets
By Haleemon Anderson
The City of Inglewood will hold a public
hearing on April 10 at 2 p.m. to consider
parking restrictions on oversized vehicles,
it was announced at this week’s meeting
of the City Council. The proposed action
would require amendment to Inglewood’s
municipal code.
The Council opened a public hearing on
action to accept vacation of a portion of
Grosvenor Street. Public Works Director
Louis Atwell reported on the proposal. Marvin
Engineering, at 261 Beach, occupies almost
the entire block of Grosvenor between Eucalyptus
and La Brea. It seeks to lease 23,000
square feet adjacent to its offices, according
to Atwell. The space is sought to increase
parking for the engineering business.
This matter opened over two years ago
and allowed one year to execute a lease,
but Marvin came back asking to revisit
the original request after the initial year,
according to Atwell. The current request
“conforms with the new downtown Inglewood
transit-oriented development (TOD),”
said Atwell. The agenda packet elaborates
further that the project “allows Marvin Engineering
to attract new employees, operate
efficiently and increase worker productivity
in support of the TOD goal to create a major
economic engine providing jobs, sales tax
and other revenues.”
Mayor James T. Butts asked to read into the
record a letter from Southern California Gas
(SCG) regarding gas pipelines it maintains
within the proposed area. The city attorney
said the resolution provides for the permanent
easement requested by SCG. The Council
adopted the resolution unanimously.
During public comments, veteran Alphonso
Parker, Jr. discussed veteran’s rights and unsecured
benefits. Resident Diane Sambrano
took exception to the hiring of an attorney
not based in the city. She noted the attorney’s
address is at Avenue of the Stars, located in
Century City.
Another resident reported on a traffic hazard
at Arbor Vitae and 4th Avenue. She requested
information on getting a four-way stop installed
at the intersection. Councilmember
George Dotson directed her to parking and
traffic enforcement staff, saying the Council
would also look into the matter.
Meanwhile, resident Willie Agee applauded
the Council, saying, “Inglewood is on its way
to being the number one city in America.”
Sambrano asked the Council to increase
wheelchair ramps in the city, saying she
recently witnessed someone struggling to
navigate an inaccessible sidewalk. “With
the increase of traffic coming, we need to
take care of the residents of this city,” said
Sambrano, who has been a vocal opponent of
the recent development boom in Inglewood.
Dotson reported on a recent block club
captain’s meeting. He said it was well-attended
by the police, traffic and parking departments.
At the meeting, Chris Jackson, community
development manager, gave a report on new
development projects within the city. Dotson
also reported on a meeting with Market Street
merchants and the Inglewood Airport Area
Chamber of Commerce. “We’re looking at
ways to encourage more use of the businesses
on Market Street,” said Dotson.
Councilmember Alex Padilla reported on
last week’s Baker to Vegas relay race. “Our
police department came out in the top five in
their division,” he said. He also announced
the Los Angeles County Fire Department
will host a recruitment information seminar
on April 4 for anyone interested in careers
in fire or police.
Councilmember Ralph Franklin asked
that residents get their households prepared
for the heavy rainstorm predicted for the
coming week.
Mayor Butts thanked Sambrano for bringing
attention to the accessibility issue. “Disability
access is very important,” he said, noting
that after some years of neglect, Inglewood
streets have been made a priority. “As we
resurface streets, we are instituting those
curb cuts.”
In other items reported, the Miracle Theatre
will present a tribute to Sam Cooke on March
31. Today, the Chamber will host a mixer at
Casa Gamino at 4937 West Centinela.
The Inglewood City Council meets every
Tuesday, unless otherwise noted, at 2 p.m.
in the council chambers on the 9th floor,
Inglewood City Hall. •

Rams Visit Worthington School
Last week, the Los Angeles Rams visited Inglewood’s Worthington Elementary School to host a Play 60 assembly promoting health and fitness. Centered on the unique Play 60 Challenge inflatable game
board, the program featured a three-team competition in a Jeopardy-style contest with health and fitness questions as well as fun challenges including various physical activities. Photo Courtesy of
