Hawthorne Historical
Society Continues Guest
Lecture Series
The Hawthorne Historical Society has
invited speakers periodically to come and speak
on the history of Hawthorne and the South Bay
area for the past eight years. Way back when
we first started the Society in 2011 one of the
first things we did was invite well known and
lesser know Hawthorne residents to share in
an informal setting their “Hawthorne history”.
It was fun to hear about their lives and what
Hawthorne meant to them. I enjoyed inviting
several of my friends from my contacts with
the City and Kiwanis. On Thursday, July 25th
this tradition will continue when Eileen and
Wayne Salmon will share their thoughts and
memories from being part of the Hawthorne
Police, Fire and School District. This special
event will be held at the Hawthorne Museum
located at Jim Thorpe Park and will begin at
6 p.m. A $5 donation is suggested. You
can RSVP at hawthornehistorical@gmail.com.
North Hawthorne
Community Association Picnic
All Hawthorne residents are invited to
attend the 9th Annual North Hawthorne
Community Association Picnic to be held on
Sunday, August 31st from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
at Eucalyptus Park. There will be food, fun,
music, crafts and the Spider-Man character for
photos. Plan to wrap up your summer with
a great family event.
Hawthorne Arts Complex
The Hawthorne community is invited to view
some really good art right here in Hawthorne.
The Hawthorne Arts Complex is hosting their
annual “Open Studios” event on Sunday,
September 8 from 2 to 6 p.m. The studios is
located at 13040 Cerise Avenue in Hawthorne.

Something New
I’ve told you before that I enjoy trying
something new. No, I didn’t jump out of an
airoplane, nothing stupid like that. I may be
stupid, but not dumb enough to end my life
by forgetting to pull a cord. I don’t even like
the parachute drop at Knot’s, so why would
I give up cold ones for a cheap thrill like a
4,000 foot free fall drop? This past weekend,
my brother-in-law from Oregon was in town
so we went over to the nearby disc golf course
and checked it out. According to the literature
that the clubhouse had available, disc golf is
the fastest growing sport in America. Disc golf
(occasionally called Frisbee golf or frolf) is a
flying disc sport in which players throw a disc
at a target; it is played using rules similar to
golf. Players complete a hole by throwing a
disc from a tee area toward a target, throwing
again from the landing position of the disc
until the target is reached. The game is played
in about 40 countries and currently there are
over 115,000 active members of the PDGA
worldwide. Of course it took me a while to
get the hang of throwing the different, weighted
discs somewhat correctly. Did you know that
just like real golf, there are drivers, mid-range
discs and putters? I observed some players
pulling a cart full of 20 to 30 different
discs. I have to say it was rather enjoyable
playing a game that you can be terrible at
and no one really cares. No pressure to get
better, no stress about beating my relative.
There was no marshal out there telling us to
speed up. Everyone we met was just having
a good time. Of course those disc carts and
bags have room for several cold ones. How
much better can it get, walking around a nice,
shady park, tossing a Frisbee around, laughing
about how bad the toss was and sipping on a
cold one? Of course we noticed the small
sign by the clubhouse strongly suggesting that
no alcohol to be consumed on the course. I
guess in the future we will have to simply
forget that we ever saw the sign, or just wait
til we finish up and retreat to our back yard
swimming pool to “freshen up”. Is
there a disc course in the South Bay?
I know of one in Long Beach. The
problem with disc golf and the LA area
is the lack of park space. If you go
on vacation or visit an area that has
a course, try it out. The best part of
playing besides having a cold one is
the fact that it’s free. Try something new this
week. Try something you have been thinking
of trying. You just might enjoy it.
Thank You
I just want to communicate my gratitude to
all of you my loyal readers for your continued
support of this endeavor. I look forward to
sharing my life with you each week. Even if
you don’t read my column, even if you never
open up my email, or pick up a good, old
fashioned newspaper, even if you think I’m
ridiculous and wasting my time, I appreciate
you, it makes me feel good inside knowing
that there is a chance that 10 or 11 people
have nothing else better to do than read this
stuff. Life is short, love your dog, accept
your spouse or partner the way he or she is,
and when all is said and done, sometimes it’s
great to shut up, sit down, relax, and have a
cold one. All of you should know by now
that God loves you and so do I, and there is
not a darn thing you can do about it.
