The goal of the dialogue was to provide youth with a better understanding of law enforcement by answering questions that students were curious about. The discussion also centered on student rights, responsibilities, appropriate police/youth interaction, policies, and current events. Host Agency Agreement Reached Between City, SER-SCSEP By Cristian Vasquez Through the recommendation of the city’s Parks, Recreation and Library Services Department, the Inglewood City Council approved a host agency agreement with SERSenior Community Resource Employment Program [SER-SCSEP] that will provide subsidies and senior citizen workers for a wide-range of positions until June 30, 2016. In order for the City of Inglewood to receive, and continue receiving Title V workers [define Title V workers], it is mandated that a renewal of the existing agreement be approved. Furthermore, the city is responsible for any training that is required, as well as the supervision of all program participants. “As host agency, the City will utilize senior workers to provide services to senior citizens, youth, and families through Parks, Recreation and Library Services Department,” states the staff reported presented to the council and signed by Parks, Recreation and Library Services Director Director Sabrina Barnes. “Job development and placement, payment of salaries, and contributions to the State Worker’s Compensation Fund are the responsibility of SER-SCSEP.” In 1975 the City of Inglewood entered various agreements with Los Angeles County’s Project Ayuda and SER-SCSEP in order to better provide employment opportunities for the city’s senior citizens. Each agency is financed through federal funds obtained though Title V of the Older Americans Act. The Older Americans Act was enacted to “foster and promote” useful part-time employment opportunities for all individuals older than 55 years of age and in great economic need. The City of Inglewood is one of many agencies, including public and non-profits, which enter host agency agreements in order to provide adequate and meaningful training opportunities for senior workers. As of the renewal of the agreement, there were a total of nine SER worker placed in within the city’s Parks, Recreation and Library Services Department. State Non-Profit To Provide Free Meals To Local Youths The Inglewood Mayor and City Council approved the adoption of a resolution granting One Hundred and Eighty Degrees and Still Standing [180SS] the ability and authority to provide free suppers and snacks to kids in the city 18 and younger, during out-ofschool time programs. The meals, which would be provided through the Parks, Recreation and Library Services Department, will be funded through a provision of the Child and Adult Care Food Program [CACFP] from Aug. 24, 2015-June 9, 2016. On Sept. 9, 2014 the mayor and council adopted a resolution [No. 14-110] in order to allow 180SS to provide free suppers through the same provisions of CACFP from Sept. 15, 2014-June 19, 2015. The meals benefited every resident younger than 18 under the City’s After School Recreation Program [ASRP] sites, Darby and Rogers Parks, as well as the Crenshaw-Imperial and Inglewood Main Libraries. “The CACFP has been a successful operation throughout this time and hundreds of Inglewood children and their families benefit from the program,” states the staff report signed by Parks, Recreation and Library Services Director Sabrina Barnes. “Since 1997 the city has provided thousands of children free nutritious summer and afterschool meals during out-of-school time, and thousands have been educated about eating healthy and physical activity habits in parks and recreation sites that provide healthy environments.” With permissions granted, it is expected that 180SS will provide an estimated 480 free suppers and 480 snacks from Monday through Friday. As of Aug. 24, and through June 9 of next year, CACFP will also operate the city’s ASRP located on the following Inglewood Unified School District campuses: Bennet-Kew, Centinela, Highland, Hudnall, Kelso, Oak and Worthington Elementary Schools, as well as La Tijera Middle School and Frank D. Parent K-8 School. The agreement will require 180SS to prepare the suppers and snacks by using menus that have been approved by the California Department of Education [CDE], as well as to deliver meals to each of the sites throughout the city. 180SS provides its own staff, equipment and transportation in order to carry out the obligations set by the food program. “Both the City an 180SS will be subject to monitoring by State and Federal agencies,” indicates the staff report. “By providing nutritious meals and nutritional education on healthy food choices coupled with our existing fitness activities, the City increases awareness and improves the health of the children we serve.” • “As host agency, the City will utilize senior workers to provide services to senior citizens, youth, and families through Parks, Recreation and Library Services Department,” Inside This Issue Certified & Licensed Professionals.......................7 Classifieds............................2 Community Briefs...............3 Film Review..........................2 Food.......................................8 Hawthorne Happenings....2 Legals............................4, 6-7 Pets........................................5 Police Reports.....................2 Seniors..................................3 Sports....................................4 Weekend Forecast Friday Sunny 84˚/70˚ Saturday Sunny 81˚/70˚ Sunday Partly Cloudy 77˚/66˚
