January 5, 2017 Page 3 Hawthorne Happenings News for the City of Good Neighbors from City Clerk Huber As I begin this year of literary gems that each week try to brighten your day just a little, let me clarify for you what may be confusing if you don’t know me or even if you do know me may seem paradoxical. Wow! Do we even know what that word means? Anyway, here are a few qualifiers: Yes, I am the City Clerk of Hawthorne, but none of my opinions expressed in this space are the official stance of the City of Hawthorne. I write this column voluntarily, without compensation. I write it weekly to keep the citizens of Hawthorne informed. It also gives me an opportunity to express my views and opinions on life sometimes in a humorous way to keep you from nodding off. Yes, I am a Christian. I respect my friends from the Jewish or Muslim or Atheists communities. I share my faith not to force it on you my dear readers, I simply have found joy and peace and wish to share that happiness with you. I’m convinced that Jesus has saved me and set me free to serve him in so many unique ways. No, I am not a drunken Christian advocating that all of you partake of alcohol to the extreme to drown your worries. I believe that God has given us dominion over the things here on earth to enjoy. God wants us to be happy. If having a cold one makes you happy, then go ahead and enjoy one. The God of the universe loves us and wants the best for us. Why worry when we have God on our side? No, I’m not a racist. I laugh at myself, and my German heritage. If you can’t laugh at yourself, it IS time for you to have a cold one and relax. Yes, I’m a San Francisco Giant baseball fan. I love rooting against the Dodgers. For some of you, that is it, you pledge never to read my column again. Spring training begins in six weeks and the real American past time will start up again. So, throughout the year when the City Clerk says, “Have a cold one! Don’t worry God loves you! Go Giants!, now you will know where I’m coming from, Germany, “Frohes neues Jahr!” My Resolutions Worry less, laugh more, watch tv less, read more, eat less, drink more, sleep more, snore less, listen more, talk less, spend more time with the grandkids, less time working, exercise more, procrastinate less, love my old lady more, argue less with her even if I’m right and she is wrong in my mind, strive for excellence and quality, have someone proof read my column to cut down on typos and embarrassing mistakes, save more, spend more on things that really matter and things that make a difference in the lives of others, criticize less, encourage more, come up with a different motto to supplement “have a cold one”, like “Let’s make Hawthorne great again” or “Be a good neighbor” or “Don’t be mean in ‘17”. Whatever you resolutions are, go for it! Strive to be the best darn person you can be! Happy 2017. Women’s Tennis League to be Formed One of my loyal readers requested that I write a little snippet about the formation of a Women’s Tennis League. The first meeting is scheduled for Saturday, January14, 2017 @ Holly Park at  7:00 am. This is an open invitation to all ladies 18 years and older. For more information please contact Lisa Aguila @ 310-626-2115. Tennis is such a great sport to learn and enjoy. I used to play when my daughter started playing in middle school. It’s a good workout and such a fun way to burn some calories. Start the New Year off right with a little exercise and have some fun with your Hawthorne neighbors. • Contact email: norbhuber@gmail.com (If you do enjoy my weekly column, please shoot me an email. Community Brief El Camino College Receives AARP Foundation Grant El Camino College recently received a grant from AARP Foundation to conduct free Work for Yourself@50+ workshops in the South Bay. This national initiative helps older adults assess opportunities for selfemployment, build skills, and connect with resources enabling them to generate income by working for themselves. El Camino College Community Education, which provides short-term, not-for-credit classes, workshops, career-training programs and events designed for professional and personal development, will offer three Work for Yourself@50+ workshops: 8:30 a.m.-10:30 a.m. January 19 in ECC’s Decathlon Room; 11:30 a.m.–1:30 p.m. February 16 at the Hawthorne Senior Center, 3901 El Segundo Blvd., Hawthorne; and 6:30 p.m.-8:30 p.m. March 16 in ECC’s Alondra Room. This Work for Yourself@50+ program is an extension of ECC Community Education’s established Young@Heart program that offers a selection of classes designed expressly for plus-50 adults. The workshops help lowincome adults age 50 and older understand the pros and cons of self-employment and support them through the early steps that can lead to success. Creating and owning a business has long been heralded as a path to financial success and economic mobility. Low-income older adults, however, face unique hurdles when re-entering the workforce in a nontraditional capacity. AARP Foundation’s and The Hartford’s investment in these grantees seeks to improve the lives of vulnerable populations by supporting and advancing effective solutions. To learn more about the Work for Yourself@50+ initiative, contact ECC Community Education at 310-660-6460, visit aarpfoundation.org/workforyourself, or call 1-888-339-5617 to receive a free tool kit and register for one of the upcoming workshops. • Classifieds The deadline for Classified Ad submission and payment is Noon on Tuesday to appear in Thursday’s paper. Taxi and Uber drivers: If Google can demonstrate that self-driven cars are safe, it’s going to revolutionize the transportation industry and send drivers and chauffeurs to the curb. The California Department of Motor Vehicles was resistant to Google’s optimistic outlook about fully autonomous vehicles sharing the road with human drivers soon, though the DMV recently softened its position. Yet, the department just announced it issued 20 permits to manufacturers to test self-driving cars in California. One of the names to watch is Waymo, launched by Google. While the incoming president claims the nation isn’t producing anything anymore and that jobs are fleeing U.S. shores for Latin America and Asia, that assessment isn’t a true picture for manufacturing or the labor market. “When I hear that [foreigners] are taking all our jobs — the answer is, they’re not,” said Harold Sirkin with Boston Consulting, an adviser to companies looking for a competitive advantage in their industries. America was losing an average of 220,000 net jobs a year to other countries a decade ago, according to the Reshoring Initiative. The organization that lobbies manufacturers to return jobs to the United States says as many jobs are being returned or created as lost these days. Companies find cheap labor here, but not the human kind. • Every Visit our Website www.heraldpublications.com issue always available online! New Issues/Old Issues • Out-of-town?
