Another man was injured in the gang-related incident in June. A third has been ordered to stand trial for the murder. The shooting, the only homicide in Lawndale in 2016, rocked the quiet community. McDonald also addressed parking, saying, “There is no parking!” He asked to know if the City’s parking plan is done and when it is coming. Asha Grant also addressed the Council, asking that they be aware of what she termed In response to the public comments, Councilmember Bernadette Suarez said the Green Line stop is within Gardena’s jurisdiction but that the Council would initiate contact. Councilmember Dan Reid acknowledged law enforcement had shut down one residence known to be a gang hangout. “We’ll be keeping the pressure on gangs,” said Reid. In the public safety report, two arrests were reported. In a narcotics-related incident, a suspect was observed asleep in a vehicle. An officer observed a needle in the suspect’s arm, and upon examination the individual was found in possession of methamphetamine and heroin. On January 24, a high school student was suspended and cited after knowledge of a firearm was discovered and circulated on social media. The weapon, which was concealed in a backpack, was found to be a BB gun. The reporting officer said the department and the City’s policy is zero tolerance against any and all firearms in school. Mayor Robert Pullen-Miles said he would look at zoning practices and push for uniform code enforcement, and at getting Gardena to monitor the Green Line bus stop. He also reported on the South Bay Workforce Investment Bureau (SBWIB), saying that the agency continues to win awards and recognition for its work in training and placing South Bay residents in jobs. The Council took action on two items, opening public comment on updating the fire code to conform to Los Angeles County codes; and first reading of an amended zoning code that will bring Lawndale in line with new state codes regarding add-on dwelling units. The City Clerk announced a vacancy on the Youth Advisory Committee, noting there were five applications for the one vacancy. The Council unanimously approved April Owens for the slot. Mayor Pullen-Miles thanked all of the applicants and encouraged them to stay involved. City Manager Steve Mandoki announced that February 18, there will be an e-waste and hazardous waste disposal event at Arthur Johns Park. Lawndale City Hall will be closed for Presidents Day on February 20.
