Little by little, through word of mouth, students began to hear about a stretching exercise with Brown. The more questions Brown answered, the more kids expressed curiosity and interest in engaging in yoga. “One day I was out on the yard, some of the kids came up to me while I had some yoga cards in my hand and they became really curious,” Brown said. “We went to a room, where we now practice during recess, and I began showing them what yoga is and they became really excited and started doing the different poses. After that, I had kids come up to me and ask if we were doing yoga. Some of these kids I didn’t even know, but they would come up to me and ask.” With the number of students asking her to teach them yoga, Brown was able to launch group activity sessions that continued growing. At the moment, these sessions are functioning taught in yoga to better focus on day-to-day tasks. In addition, the exercise has led to building a culture of greater cooperation among students. “It invites an environment where they [students] can rely on each other and ask each other how they perform a certain pose and maybe that can help,” said Brown. “It has been defeating the environment of ‘I can’t do it’ and they actually get it done.
