Page 2 April 2, 2015 TORRANCE TRIBUNE TerriAnn in Torrance A Celebration of Community By TerriAnn Ferren Pictures by TerriAnn Ferren It is unique that a community takes time to honor those who help those in need. Last week the Kiwanis Club of Torrance hosted the eighth Celebration of Community Luncheon honoring non-profits in the South Bay. Kiwanis Club is an international service organization dedicated to helping children around the world. Donna Duperron, current President and CEO of the Torrance Area Chamber of Commerce, was, in 2008, the President of Kiwanis Club International. She told me that at that time, there had not been an event bringing together non-profits for recognition. Donna met with then Mayor of Torrance, See TerriAnn, page 8 Frank Scotto, and as a result, the Kiwanis Club of Torrance celebrated their first event at the Torrance Marriott honoring non-profits within the community with 221 attendees and 11 business partners. Former Senator Jenny Oropeza attended the event and provided the welcome comments. It was the beginning of a tradition that continues to bring focus to non-profits in our community. Last Thursday’s Celebration of Community luncheon was hosted by The Kiwanis Club of Torrance and held at the Doubletree Hotel, with a gathering together of 44 Community Non-Profits and philanthropic companies of the South Bay. Sponsors of the event included Councilman Tim Goodrich. Dr. Anil Muhammed, Fine Arts Commissioner. Chamber of Commerce President Donna Duperron and Mayor Pat Furey. Cristian Vasquez, Heidi Maerker, and Charlene Nishimura from the Torrance Tribune.
