Destination: Art Receives Award For Enriching Community On March 31, 2016 Destination: Art received the Torrance Advantage Award for Enriching the Community. The Awards Ceremony was held at The Strand Brewing Co. in Torrance conducted by Fran Fulton of the City of Torrance Office of Economic Development. The Mayor greeted the crowd and the City Council members were award presenters. YMCA’s Healthy Kids Day, the Y’s national initiative to improve health and well-being for kids and families, will feature a fun-filled day full of games, arts and crafts, fitness, healthy foods, educational activities, prizes, giveaways and more to motivate and teach families how to develop a healthy routine at home. The Torrance-South Bay YMCA’s Healthy Kids Day takes place at 2900 W. Sepulveda Boulevard, Torrance on April 30, 2016 from 9:00am-1:00pm. This special annual event is free and open to the community. The first 400 kids who attend will receive a Healthy Kids Day t-shirt. New members who join during Healthy Kids Day weekend will also benefit from free Joining Fees. El Camino College Presents a Celebration of Chicano Culture Several events have been planned for “A Celebration of Chicano Culture” through May at El Camino College, 16007 Crenshaw Boulevard, near Torrance. The lecture “Women in Charrería Tradition” presented by Maribel Gutiérrez and Las Azaleas from 11:15 a.m.-12:40 p.m. April 14 in the East Dining Room. “Chicanos in Sports” is the next lecture, presented by Pasadena City College Professor Enrique Orozco from 11:15 a.m.-12:40 p.m. April 18 in the East Dining Room. California State University, Northridge Professor Fermin Herrera will discuss “Characteristics of Mexican Spanish” from 11:15 a.m.-12:15 p.m. April 26 in Distance Education Room 166. A Mexican music and dance concert will be presented by Conjunto Hueyapan, Mariachi Estrella de Jalisco and Nuestras Raices from 1-2 p.m. April 26 in Marsee Auditorium. The topic “Chicanos in the Military” will be discussed by Eddie Morin from 11:15 - 12:40 p.m. May 2 in the East Dining Room. The celebration wraps up with the lecture “Cultural Diversity and Identity in Chicano Boyle Heights,” presented by Whittier College Professor Danilo Lozano from 1:00 - 2:00 p.m. May 3 in Distance Education Room 166. A Celebration of Chicano Culture is sponsored by the El Camino College Office of Staff and Student Diversity, the Behavioral and Social Sciences Division, the Humanities Division, and the Student Equity Program.
