TORRANCE TRIBUNE April 27, 2017 Page 3 Up and Adam Torrance Exerts Dominance in League Opener By Adam Serrao Every Pioneer League team knows that the beginning of the baseball season is simply a warm-up for the inner-city rivalry matchups that come during divisional play. That’s why when the Torrance Tartars baseball team began the regular season with a loss here and a loss there, head coach Terry DeWan and his players didn’t panic one bit. After some fine-tuning and some added chemistry, the Tartars have become somewhat of a juggernaut heading into the end of the month of April. The team has now won seven of its last eight games with a sweep over its rivals from South High coming most recently in back-to-back games last week. It’s never easy taking down a rival from the Pioneer League. Torrance learned that the hard way last Wednesday afternoon when it took on the Spartans in the league play opener. South and head coach Grady Sain came out of the gates ready to play. Junior Connor Glasing led off with a single and later came around to score the first run of the game on a Torrance error in the top of the first inning. When Torrance answered in the very next inning to tie things up, both sides knew that they were destined for another close Pioneer League matchup. “It was a tight competitive game by two good teams,” South coach Sain explained. “We know the pitching in our league is really good. You have to capitalize on your opportunities.” Unfortunately for South, it was Torrance’s pitching that stole the show and DeWan’s team that capitalized on opportunities. Senior Dante Mendoza pitched a complete game for the Tartars while allowing eight hits and just two earned runs. “Coach was calling for my changeup a lot,” Mendoza said. “I had a good feel for it and got a lot of ground balls with it.” Despite racking up more hits than Torrance, South was only able to get one more run across the plate when Ryan Wilmoth scored in the fifth on a Jacob McNally single. Torrance, however, would use a huge fourth inning to separate itself from its rival. The Tartars tacked on three runs to their total when Brad Kong led things off with a double in the fourth and got his team’s momentum going. Alex Gallegos later came to the plate and singled to load the bases before Kai Hershberger knocked a single into right field that eventually cleared the bases and scored three runs after a South error in the outfield. The huge play gave Torrance a 4-1 lead at the time and eventually cemented a 4-2 victory. Jacob McNally gave the Spartans their best chance to win at the plate by going two for two with two RBIs. South starter Nathan Critchett pitched five innings of five-hit ball while allowing four runs (one earned). For Torrance, Feist led the way at the plate with a one for three day with two RBIs. Junior BJ Becerra went one for one with two walks and scored two runs. The Tartars went on to beat South in the second game of their back-to-back matchups. This time, Gallegos pitched and allowed just two hits while striking out six in his team’s 9-1 win. Noah Ishikawa went two for two with three RBIs against a pitching staff that was without starter Kevin Ishimaru, who sat out due to arm stiffness. The Tartars (15-7, 2-0) will now look to stay perfect in divisional play as they move on to battle their Pioneer League foes, the Leuzinger Olympians. South (10-9, 2-2) will be searching for its first win of league play against the West High Warriors. West High Right when it looked like the West High Warriors baseball team was going to fall further behind in the race for this year’s Pioneer League crown, it rallied against the Santa Monica Vikings, forced extra innings and eventually came out with a win. With just three hits to their name entering the seventh inning of play, something finally woke the Warriors up when the team recorded six runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to somehow tie things up at the very last minute. Santa Monica scored two in the third, two in the fourth and three in the fifth to take a massive 7-1 lead early on. That’s when West’s Grant Decatrel and Sean Whorley, amongst others came alive to save the game. Seven hits in the seventh inning got the team to seven runs to tie the game before Whorley won it in the ninth with a sacrifice fly. Whorley also pitched the final three innings of the game, keeping Santa Monica hitless and off the board. West’s (15-7, 1-1) miraculous win comes at just the right time. League play will resume this week when the Warriors take on the South High Spartans as West looks to run down both North and West, who both currently sit atop the Pioneer League standings. North High While waiting for league play to resume once more, the North High Saxons have been Community Briefs Celebrating Local Color in Torrance “Seafoam Lavendar” Pastel by Margaret Lindsey.
