My hope is that everyone will get a chance to experience a Relay For Life event and like myself and many others, it becomes something they attend every year.” For Fisher, who has been involved with all 13 of the city’s relays, is happy she shared her story with other survivors and people in attendance. “It seemed less big, in some way, writing it out on paper,” Fisher said. “It seemed like a friend’s story in a way; not mine. I think in some way I always wanted to share, just was not sure how.” • City Council from front page cultural, and recreational programs.” The library has hosted author visits, financial literacy workshops, musical performances and hands-on art programs for adults. In the end Dr. Klatt raised $27,000 to fight cancer. As of Monday night, Relay for Life of Torrance had raised $194,260.24 but the fundraising efforts for this year will not end until August 31, giving the community the chance to continue contributing in order to reach this year’s goal of $240,000. Last year the Relay For Life of Torrance was No. 9 in fundraising throughout the State of California, which hosted more than 400 Relays.  “The planning process is basically year round and starts almost right after the Relay ends,” Slover said. “We will start to come up with a theme for next year and start recruiting for the Leadership Committee as we close out the year. We also plan other fundraisers and attend other community events to promote the Relay.” This year’s Relay for Life of Torrance reported 60 teams and 825 participants. appropriate the $9,385 donation made by the Friends of the Torrance Library. The appropriated funds will be designated to fund a variety of adult programs. Theses funds will be deposited into the library’s trust fund and from there will be transferred to the “appropriate operational fund.” Programs to be funded by the donation include adult summer reading programs, tailored to encourage adults to develop “positive” reading behavior and that will encourage them to participate in library programs, along with the city’s youth. “The Friends of the Torrance Library continue to generously support library programs and activities, and have voted to fund adult programming for fiscal year 2015-16,” indicates the staff report made available. “This generous donation will enable the library to continue providing a rich array of adult educational, Police Reports from page 3 24 Hour Service Since 1990 • Lic # 770059 • C-42 C-36 C-34 C20 A painting PAINTERS PLUS INTERIOR • EXTERIOR PLUS IMPROVEMENTS • REPAIRS FREE ESTIMATES LOWEST PRICES • GUARANTEED QUALITY 5 YEAR FREE MAINTENANCE SERVING THE BEACH CITIES PM 2800 BLOCK 232ND ST Suspect(s) smashes window for entry, heavily FOR OVER ransacks 20 YEARS and takes unknown property at time of report Burglary-Commercial 4/15/2015 6:00 AM 2700 BLOCK PLAZA DEL AMO Suspect(s) cuts hole in door for entry and takes property/pallets of cameras Burglary-Auto 4/14/2015 6:55 PM 25300 BLOCK CRENSHAW BLVD Suspect(s) smashes window for entry and takes property/purse Battery-Simple 4/14/2015 3:20:01 PM CALLE MAYOR & ANZA AVE Suspect repeatedly punches victim in the arm and hip Burglary-Residential 4/14/2015 3:11 PM 3700 BLOCK SPENCER ST Suspect(s) enters CALL DON 310-798-0450 LIC # 726089 become involved with the city’s Relay events. “I would like to see less invasive treatment for patients until a cure is found,” Slover said. “My mother was very fortunate and is now a 44-year survivor. Currently, Relay helps me fight for friends and family that are touched or lost to the disease.” Slover, who just wrapped up her second year as event lead for the city’s Relay for Life, first became involved with Relay during the city’s second-ever event back in 2003. She admits that she was unaware of the purpose of the event but in 2004 one of the mothers on the drill team that her daughter danced in started a team leading to her family’s full exposure to the Relay movement. “The following year we again participated on a team. The next two years I served as a Team Captain for a local dance studio,” Slover said. “At the closing ceremony, they asked for people that may be interested in joining the planning committee. I asked my Co-Captain what she thought of me joining and she told me I was crazy as my schedule was too busy, but it just weighed on my heart and I joined in a small role. After the first year I took over the accounting for three years, team development for one year, and Co-Event Lead for two [years].” Relay for Life has its origins in the mid-1980s when Dr. Gordy Klatt, a Tacoma colorectal surgeon, became determined to enhance the income of his local American Cancer Society office. Dr. Klatt decided to personally raise money for the fight by doing something he enjoyed—running marathons. So in May 1985, the doctor spent 24 hours circling the track at Baker Stadium at the University of Puget Sound. Throughout the night the doctor ran more than 83 miles and friends paid $25 to TerriAnn from page 5 needles. Snoopy did look toward his back once or twice, but he was calm. After all the needles were inserted, the muzzle came off and Maureen coaxed Snoopy to lie down and rest. He did – for 20 minutes. Then the needles were removed. After the treatment, Snoopy was taken to the back where he would be ‘chipped’. Seems like Snoopy is living his days at the ‘spa’! This is truly a mission of mercy by Maureen. In the beginning, when Maureen first brought Snoopy home, she invested in a pet stroller so he could go out along with her other dogs on walks, but by the third week he didn’t need it because he began walking with her other dogs as his endurance, stamina, and strength improved. “He’s one of the dogs now,” said Maureen. About now you might wonder how much all this is costing Maureen? A lot. She is taking care of the expenses out of her own pocket, but if you can help Maureen while she rehabilitates Snoopy, please go to www. GoFundMe.com and donate. I asked Maureen about Snoopy’s upcoming adoption. She told me it would be great for Snoopy to go to a family who already has a dog, as Snoopy is very social, like all Beagles. He also will need tender care because of his back. Hang on Snoopy, hang on. There are so many people involved with the rehabilitation of this very special dog - named Snoopy. Who was the Good Samaritan who initially called Torrance Animal Control? We may never know. But I do know that Maureen O’Donnell is a saint for stepping in when she was needed into the life of a little dog she named Snoopy. • handyman BILL’S HOME & APARTMENT MAINTENANCE CONTRACTOR QUALITY at Handyman Prices.
