The Hometown Heroes Military recognition is our own way of recognizing and honoring Torrance residents and their family members,” said Furey. “Tonight we are excited to present the 2017 Hometown Heroes banners.” This year’s Hometown Heroes are William Final Kraemer, Army; Joel Massa, Air Force; Nicholas R. Sims, Army; Jack Garrabrant, Army; Michael Kane, Marines; Keith Weideman (in memory), Navy; Christopher Taylor, Marines; Baltazar Fedalizo, Navy; John Joseph LaFirenza (in memory), Navy; Wayne Verrell, Navy; Charlie Boyle (in memory), Marines; Cesar E. De Morey, Army; Jose A. De Morey, Army; Jesse A. Pasillas, Navy; and Ron Christopher Gray, Sr., Navy. The Hometown Heroes Military Banner Recognition Program was created by the City of Torrance and has gained support from the Vietnam Veterans of America South Bay Chapter 53, as well as the Blue Star Mothers of America, Inc. South Bay L.A. Chapter CA5. This program recognizes Torrance’s men and women in uniform who are either currently serving in one of the branches of the armed forces, veterans who have served in the past, or those veterans who have already passed away. The program also recognizes and honors the service of Torrance families with loved ones serving in the United States military. “Hometown Heroes military recognition was created in 2012 in response to residents noticing similar banners in other cities and requesting that the City of Torrance develop our own program to honor our own heroes,” said Furey. “Each year when the Armed Forces Day Parade comes, the military no matter from whatever branch they are, they always remark how beautiful our streets look simply because of the banners that they see where we are saluting our veterans.” Part of the program includes designing and printing street banners that are then installed throughout the city in honor of those individuals. Each year the banners are set up to coincide with the parade in the middle of May. Once installed, the banners are presented to the families and sponsors. During Tuesday’s meeting, the families and sponsors received a souvenir photo from the Council of the banner acknowledging the hero’s service to the city and nation. In addition, the honorees present were able to take a picture with their family, friends and the Mayor and Council members. “With tonight’s presentation of 15 new banners, we will have recognized 109 Torrance See City Council, page 7
