Page 2 June 18, 2015 TORRANCE TRIBUNE International was recognized with the “Man of the Year” award. This year’s “George M. Whittlesey Memorial Award” went to Joe Ahn of Northrop Grumman. Selecting the honorees is never an easy task for the Chamber and Ferren wasn’t afraid to share how surprised she was when told of the award she had been selected to receive. “To be perfectly honest, when Donna Duperron first called me, I told her it must be a mistake and I didn’t believe her,” Ferren said. Ferren has engaged in volunteer efforts her entire life and the thought of receiving an award for something that she does naturally was unexpected. “All my life it seems [she’s volunteered]; either with the Girl Scouts, church, or around the neighborhood,” Ferren added. The J. Walker Owens Award was named after one of the chamber’s former executives who served for more than 32 years ago. The award is earned by someone whose volunteer work surpasses the norm of volunteerisms efforts. Ferren has volunteered for a plethora of events, including the chamber’s annual installation and business award, the Torrance Police Department Award and Appreciation Luncheons, and numerous ribbon-cutting ceremonies; she has served on committees for regional breakfasts and countless community activities such as the city’s relay for life, the city’s variety show and rock around the block. “The definition of a volunteer is when one enters into serving without compensation,” last year’s J. Walker Owens Volunteerism Award recipient Leslie Cortez said. “Those of us involved with the Torrance Area Chamber of Commerce fall into that category and yet in any endeavor where people are involved, there are those who stand out in their unselfish commitment and involvement.” In attendance were the city’s council members, mayor, treasurer and City Manager Leroy Jackson, who Ferren expressed her gratitude toward for his leadership and guidance. “He is my mentor and friend,” Ferren said. “He has fostered in this city, not only for employees but for those outside the city, to serve in anyway they can. You [Jackson] have always opened that door and it is beautiful the way you do that.” Cortez not only acknowledged the hard work and dedication demonstrated by Ferren to volunteering but highlighted the compassion and kindness that accompanies her in every task she accepts. “In addition to her grassroots community involvement, TerriAnn has committed her time to being a Torrance Area Chamber of Commerce ambassador for the past five, going on six years,” Cortez said. “To become an ambassador, a member must be in good standing, have developed a track record of involvement in chamber activities and demonstrated a good knowledge of how the Torrance Area Chamber of Commerce benefits its members and TerriAnn has excelled above and beyond these requirements.” Ferren, who also thanked her parents and kids for attending, attributes her love for volunteering to her upbringing and is thankful for having the opportunity to give of her time. “My parents always volunteered and I followed suit,” Ferren said. “I remember my mom volunteering as the school nurse when they needed one, and my daddy was always volunteering at church – I remember him even bundling newspapers for recycling when no one was recycling. “I continue to volunteer because I truly believe we need to help each other in this life and it is a privilege to serve others anyway we can,” Ferren said. “We all have different gifts and if we pool those gifts - much can be done together.” • Burkley & Brandlin LLP A T T O R N E Y S A T L AW Living Trusts/Wills, Probate, Employment Law, Personal Injury Trust and Estates Litigation, Business Litigation, Civil Litigation 310-540-6000 *AV Rated (Highest) Martindale - Hubbell / **Certified Specialist Estate Planning, Trust & Probate Law, State Bar of California, Board of Legal Specialization Legal Aid for Elders Can Your Executor Access Your Digital Accounts? By R. Christine Brown, southbayelderlaw.com “Do you have any important business online?” That is now just as important of a conversation as asking somebody their health care preferences in a life-threatening situation. Leaving your digital accounts out of your estate plan can prove to be a big, bad mistake. Most digital accounts require passwords for access, even accounts we would not have considered as important even a decade ago. For example, if you open a line of credit with a furniture store, you might be required to produce a password either online or by phone to do something as simple as check the account balance or the next payment due date. If there is still a balance due on the account, then it is important that your executor or estate administrator have that password so he or she can pay the appropriate amount. If you think that these smaller accounts do not matter, you might be surprised to know that something as simple as scheduling cable Police Reports KIDS BOWL FREE! 7 Days a Week – 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. KIDS SUMMER MENU $5.50 (plus tax) your choice of: Grilled Cheese Peanut Butter & Jelly Slice of Cheese Pizza Hamburger Hot Dog Apple Juice or Skim Milk Apple Slices or French Fries Register at www.kidsbowlfree.com/palosverdes For more information please call Charlotte at charlotte@pvbowl.com; or 310.326.5120 repairs can be difficult without the password. That was the case for a WGN reporter after her husband died of cancer. Her experience is recounted in a recent WGN article titled “Preparing for the digital afterlife.” Unfortunately, her husband was the only person who knew the password and the reporter was therefore unable to request any changes or repairs to the cable account. When preparing your estate plan remember every account you have. Even if you think it is too small to bother with in an estate plan, someone will need to have access to it if you pass away.
