A recent Forbes article, “6 Things Caregivers Must Do While There’s Still Time,” explains that many family caregivers are part of what’s called “the sandwich generation.” They’ve just stopped caring for their own kids and now have to start to care for parents or older relatives. The article suggests that families that are just “starting out on their elder care journey can pack their ‘suitcase’ ahead of time” to make sure that they’re ready to go when decisions need to be made, and the important information and documents are required. Forbes gives some suggestions to help get ready for common stressful situations that happen in elder care: Make Up a Detailed List of Medicine for Your Parent(s). Misdiagnosis happens when a senior is unable to communicate what medicines they are taking (or prescribed) to medical providers. You Must Have “The Talk” with Your Parents. Long before memory problems might occur, talk to your parents about their wants, needs, financial resources, health issues, and end-of-life decisions. The article encourages you to be persistent and supportive so the choices they make are clear. Update the Documents. Make sure that your parents’ important legal, financial, and health care documents are reviewed and updated in advance of possible health and cognitive issues. This should be done on a regular basis. Do You Have Access to Their Important Information and Documents? It’s important that you keep documents in a safe deposit box so that you can get to them. Review Your Parents’ Assets, Income and Expenses. With this you can anticipate future costs. You don’t want them to outlive their money and have trouble affording necessary care. Their income and assets should have some flexibility to access resources if their care needs change. Research the Care Providers and Living Situations Your Parents Want. Before the care is really needed, the article advises that you find out where your parents want to go if being admitted to a hospital, nursing home, or other care facility. This will save you some headaches during a financial or medical crisis. Finally, try to respect your parents’ independence and be supportive and ready to help them with their needs as they age. The walking tour featured three destinations where a diverse group of artists were able since early April and put the Tartars in the driver’s seat in the Pioneer League standings. North would rebound nicely with a pair of wins over Leuzinger and South High to close out league play with a bang. They outscored their opponents 29-4 in that two-game stretch to finish out the regular season, but by that time, it was too late. Torrance wouldn’t lose again and North was cemented into the number two spot in the Pioneer League standings going into the playoffs. The seeding didn’t seem to affect North much in the first round of the playoffs. The Saxons were able to pull off a win against their first opponent, Buena, but it didn’t come easily. Buena scored the first three runs of the game on North to jump out to a 3-0 lead going into the fifth inning. A big, four-run sixth inning for North, though, helped the team pull away and eventually grab a 6-5 win. Next up on the schedule was El Segundo, who North had beaten 10-6 earlier in the month. Unfortunately for North, things didn’t quite go the same way this time around. Shonnie Baker led the way for the Saxons, crushing a two-run home run in the fifth inning to get the Saxons on the board. Those two runs, however, were all North could muster against El Segundo pitchers Shannon Brooker and Monique Benjamin. 10 hits and five runs of their own would ultimately spell defeat for the Saxons as El Segundo ended North’s playoff run and their season. Though the season didn’t necessarily end the way that Miller, his team, or the North High faithful would have liked it too, it was still a season full of great moment and memories. The Lady Saxons have now made the playoffs in six straight years under coach Miller so there is not even a question about it. Miller and his team will be back next year and will most certainly contend for a Pioneer League championship with their eyes focused clearly on a CIF crown. • to showcase their works and guests enjoyed refreshments and live entertainment. The other two venues were on the Plaza outside the Buffalo Fire Department located at 1261 Cabrillo Ave. and the new APC Fine Arts Gallery Re-opening at 1621 Cabrillo Ave. • A series of paintings by longtime friends Ron Libbrecht (on right) and Ron Hust entitled Ron2 Squared were featured at the new APC Fine Arts Gallery Re-opening which was part of the artwalk and reception. This exhibit will be open through July 24. Barbara St. John poses in front of her art showcased at the Destination: Art Artwalk and Reception held on June 27. The Destination: Art reception included works by black & white photographer Philip Earl of Philip Earl Photographs of Palos Verdes Estates.
