A check of freeway projects for the week of Aug. 15 through Aug. 20 in the local District 7 area found minor work planned on the 105 and 110 freeways. Century Freeway: Electrical work is planned Friday for the both the eastbound and westbound connectors with the 110. Project and delays are scheduled to last one day. Harbor/Pasadena Freeways: Electrical work is planned along six ramps and sections of the 110. All will take place on Friday, starting with the El Segundo Boulevard onramp, offramp and main line. All lanes will be closed for the one-day project. Work is also scheduled on lanes 4 and 5 between El Segundo Boulevard and Rosecrans and a similar lane closure along a one-mile stretch between the Century Freeway and El Segundo Boulevard, according to Caltrans. Even when the two-week project affecting Century Boulevard is completed, Los Angeles city leaders have bigger plans for that area with traffic consequences lasting several years. The city and airport authority want to build an elevated People Mover that connects the Metro station along Aviation Boulevard and 96th Street with LAX. The project, expected to cost $5.5 billion represents the single largest building project in city history. The project’s environmental impact report was released in June, and copies were available for review at public libraries in El Segundo, Hawthorne, Inglewood and Lennox. The 45- day public comment period on the project’s EIR closed on Aug. 6, and groundbreaking for the transit station could occur in 2018 if the EIR receives a favorable review from neighboring cities and citizens. Once the rail station is completed, work on an automated people mover, or APM, would begin. Airports around the nation, including San Francisco, Oakland and Phoenix, use people movers to ferry airline passengers to and from transportation centers. The LAXMetro joint project calls for development of a car-rental center and additional parking along the transit corridor. •
