My duties included cleaning the operatory rooms, filling supplies when needed, and autoclaving the instruments. I really enjoyed the work and the people. When Labor Day came around, frankly, I didn’t once think about the day or what it meant. To me, at the age of 15, it meant a day off work and a day with my family. I suppose many young people today think the same way. I decided to do some digging and found out some interesting facts. Perusing the United States Department of Labor Bulletin article Number 29, written in 1900 by Miss M.C. De Graffenried entitled “Labor Day,” I discovered that Oregon was the first state to legislate for the general observance of Labor Day as a legal holiday. (At that time there were only 36 states plus the District of Columbia.) De Graffenried wrote, “…No other country sets apart by law a similar festival. Its sanction by 36 state legislatures and by Congress for the District of Columbia shows the general agreement as to the great value and importance of the idea for which the holiday stands – recognition of the rights and dignity of labor. This open legalized recognized is one of the many results of the evolution of the workingman from a condition of bondage and serfdom into a higher civil and industrial grade. Labor Day could never have existed but for the moral force of universal manhood suffrage under democratic institutions.” The article goes on to explain the origins of the holiday citing parades in New York City in 1882. The General assembly of the Knights of Labor, while viewing a parade and, according to De Graffenried, “As the various organizations passed, Robert Price of Lonaconing, Md. said to the general worthy foreman of the Knights of Labor, ‘This is Labor Day earnest, Uncle Dick.’” This was considered the first Labor Day parade. Interesting enough, California adopted the holiday on February 23, 1897. Curiously, the documents state California celebrated Labor Day prior to that under the original law, which was approved in 1893, and set Labor Day for the first Monday in October. There are many other interesting facts about Labor Day and I encourage you to take a moment to remember those, throughout our history, who lobbied for the respect of workers. How do you celebrate Labor Day? Do you get the day off? Lots of people are off but others choose to work, or must work on that day. I decided to ask a few people in Torrance how they will spend the upcoming Labor Day. Rene Ayala, Director of Worship and Music at St. Lawrence Martyr Catholic Church, told me, “I think it is a fabulous holiday for the country because it gives us a chance to be thankful for the fact that, those of us who have jobs and work, and it is also a time for us to take time and reflect on those who don’t [have jobs] and maybe think about ways we can help and encourage, or somehow strengthen and be faithful to those who are struggling.” Then I ran into Torrance resident, Dan Thomas and he said, “Years ago, I used to get together with friends and See TerriAnn, page 8 James Egnatuk Dan Thomas Rene Ayala
