El Camino and Northrop Grumman Partner to Offer Education and Training A new program through El Camino College and Northrop Grumman Corporation offers students education and training to join the workforce and land good-paying jobs.    With the pace of the nation’s economic growth steadily rising and the job market gaining momentum, many businesses and manufacturers are actively searching for skilled employees. Through the El Camino College/Northrop Grumman collaboration, students are offered for-credit training in the electronics assembly and test lab at the company’s Space Park facility in Redondo Beach.    The partnership with Northrop Grumman is an important part of a student’s education, offering real world experience that can’t be duplicated in a classroom setting, said El Camino College Director for Career Pathways Naomi Castro.   “This is the perfect example of a program that is helping students gain both college credit and build their resume with a really impressive experience. Northrop Grumman has been a flexible partner, while still being very clear about what they need from us and our students.” For more information about this program, please contact El Camino’s Small Business Development Center at 310-973-3167 or www. southbaysbdc.org. • State of the City from front page See State of the City, page 9 Burkley & Brandlin LLP A T T O R N E Y S A T L AW Living Trusts/Wills, Probate, Employment Law, Personal Injury Trust and Estates Litigation, Business Litigation, Civil Litigation 310-540-6000 *AV Rated (Highest) Martindale - Hubbell / **Certified Specialist Estate Planning, Trust & Probate Law, State Bar of California, Board of Legal Specialization You're Invited to Attend the South Bay Business Mavericks Gala & Grant Awards! While Torrance is already outpacing the nation in employment with a 4 percent unemployment rate compared with the national average of 6.2 percent, Furey is looking to create a special team consisting of city staff and business leaders to attract more companies to Torrance. “I’m excited to share an initiative I announced in July: we have begun the process to create a Torrance Economic Development Committee to help guide the city and bolster our efforts in attracting and retaining businesses in Torrance,” said Furey. Already Torrance has become a hub for Los Angeles’s craft brewery scene. The city hosts a number of breweries, including the Red Car Brewery, run by this year’s Citizens of the Year award winners Bob and Laurie Brandt. “We are keenly aware of our automotive industry, but over the past few years we have grown into a major destination for craft breweries,” said Furey. Along with craft beer, Furey cited a number of sporting events that brought people from across the nation to Torrance. This year the city has hosted the AYSO National Games, the Torrance National TNT Fastpitch Softball Tournament, and the Herbalife Triathlon, and he said more events are in the works. “Stay turned; with similar collaboration we are exploring many more opportunities with the Torrance Visitor’s Bureau to allow more people to discover Torrance,” said Furey. Furey also updated the luncheon attendees on the state of city services. He mentioned a number of changes in both branches of public Mayor Pat Furey, with Citizens of the Year Bob and Laurie Brandt, are flanked by representatives from state and county officials during the 2014 State of the City luncheon held on October 2.
