week when it travels to Compton to take on
the Centennial Apaches in a Pioneer League
matchup.
North, on the other hand, has now won its
second game in a row as well as three out of
the last four. A matchup with the Leuzinger
Olympians waits in the wings and could possibly
decide who takes over sole possession
of first place in the Pioneer League standings.
While the Saxons’ (4-2, 1-0) best football
has yet to be played, Croce and company are
sitting pretty heading into the latter portion
of their regular season schedule.
Torrance High
After getting shut out two weeks ago at
the hands of the Lawndale Cardinals, the
Torrance Tartars turned the tables on their
opponent last week. With a 48-0 victory at
home against the Centennial Apaches, head
coach Rock Hollis and his team not only
got back on track on the right side of the
standings, but also won their first game of
Pioneer League play.
Starting quarterback Nathan Gottlieb accounted
for three touchdowns against the
Apaches, but most of Torrance’s work was
done on the ground grinding out the clock. All
four of Terrence Reyes, Ethan Meyers, Kyle
Sell and Eric Suarez rushed for a touchdown
on the night. Meyers carried the ball eight
times for 58 yards, while Suarez had six carries
for 59 on the ground. The Tartars (2-4, 1-0)
great all-around game vaulted them to the
top of the Pioneer League standings. Coach
Hollis and Torrance will look to stay there
when they travel to South High to take on
the hapless Spartans this week at South High.
South High
The South High Spartans’ nightmare of
a season continued last week in the team’s
first game of league play that took place on
the road at Leuzinger High. Not only did the
team remain winless on the season, but with
a 35-0 shutout remained scoreless through
the last four games as well. South (0-6, 0-1)
has now been shut out in five of the last six
games played this season. Opposing quarterback
Michael Culpepper accounted for three
touchdowns on the night. The Spartans will
welcome the Torrance Tartars to their home
field this week.
