This was another unselfish game and it
can be traced to head coach John Peterson’s
rotation of all 12 players on the roster. Each
had significant playing time minutes, including
all five seniors who started the game. Jordan
Peterson had four assists, including one to
Bo Takehara. Peterson had a breakaway and
a seemingly easy layup. Instead she passed
to an open Takehara for a three-pointer for
a 43-15 lead.

League title.
Eagles Bounce Back Against
Hawthorne
The boys’ basketball team is poised to
have its best season win-loss record in eight
years. The big loss to Santa Monica might
have demoralized another team, but it served
as more motivation for head coach David
March’s squad against Hawthorne. The result
was a 51-23 win over the Cougars on
Senior Night.
Four-year starter Michael Lynch broke away
for the team’s first points on a thundering
dunk. That delighted the standing room-only
crowd and sent the Ruthless Rooters section
into a frenzy. Lynch would score the
first five points for his team on his way to
a game-high 18. Harrison Hebert’s layup at
the end of the first quarter gave the Eagles
a 19-9 lead.
This game wasn’t close, but give credit
to Hawthorne’s coaching staff to motivate
their young and outmanned team. March
rotated all 12 players on his roster into the
game and was generous with playing time.
He also made a classy gesture in the second
half. Sensing the game was well in hand,
he called a timeout when Hawthorne head
coach Chris Palisin wanted to call a timeout
but had none left. Palisin displayed a thumbs
up towards the El Segundo bench to signal
his thanks.
Besides Lynch’s 18 points, the Eagles got
17 points and two dunks from Dylan Aubert.
Hebert, Miles Jones and Leo Cagan each
scored four points.
The Eagles improved to 15-9 overall and
3-3 in Ocean League play. The last time they
won more than 15 games in a season was in
2011. El Segundo faced Beverly Hills last
night and travel to Culver City Friday night.
The Eagles wind up their regular season
schedule at home next Thursday night at
7:30 p.m. against Santa Monica.
Girls Water Polo Team
Dominates
The Eagles stayed perfect in Ocean League
play with a 15-1 win over Beverly Hills. The
Normans were outplayed from the start and
had no answer for El Segundo’s passing or
defense. Sophia Caravello in goal was nearly
perfect with nine saves.
El Segundo took a commanding lead in the
first period when Christina Grenke, Christina
Mullane and Jenna Olson combined to
score four goals. In the second period, Olson
scored in transition to stretch the lead to 5-0.
Grenke fed Mullane on a perfect lead pass to
make it 6-1. Before halftime Grenke found
an open Alisa Flores, who then rifled in a
score to make it 9-1.
In the second half, the Eagles continued
their pressure on both offense and defense.
Savannah Ghale got the scoring off with a
goal from inside. Alexa Modry scored as
time was winding down in the third period.
In the final period, Avary Torres got into the
scoring column with a lob shot to make it
12-1. Maya Weiss had assists to Sarah Alexander
and Torres to make it 14-1. With 2:35
remaining Modry passed inside to Flores, who
found the back of the net for the final score.
With the win, the Eagles improved to 3-0 in
the Ocean League and are poised to capture
another league title. They faced Culver City
Tuesday and travel to meet the Centaurs today
at 3 p.m. The Eagles wind up their Ocean
League schedule next Wednesday at 3 p.m.
against Santa Monica at home.
Boys Soccer Stays Perfect
El Segundo improved to 6-0 in Ocean
League play with a 3-0 win over Santa
Monica and a 5-0 shutout over Hawthorne.
The Eagles controlled the pace of play in
each game and demonstrated why they’re
ranked third in the CIF Southern Section
Division 3 polls.
Against Samo, the Eagles got on the scoreboard
when Malcolm Holtzmann-Cisse’s goal
made it 1-0. Vikings goalie Nate Comay made
a save, but the ball trickled in for a score.
In the second half, Jack Finders scored from
the penalty box to give the Eagles a 3-0 win
over the 10th-ranked Vikings.
The Eagles took control in their match
with Hawthorne. Caden Schepps was key
at midfield by consistently winning the ball
back and making crisp passes. Schepps’ pass
helped set up a score by Seth Thompson in
the second half. Holtzmann-Cisse scored his
league-leading 11th goal in the first half.
Finders and Denis Vezina scored second half
goals as the Eagles improved to 14-1-1 overall.
The Eagles played host to Beverly Hills
yesterday and are on the road the next two

at home next Wednesday against Santa
Monica at 4:30 p.m.
Girls Soccer Team in Contention
The Lady Eagles are in a logjam and are
one game out of first place. Beverly Hills
is atop the Ocean League with a 5-1 record
while El Segundo, Santa Monica and Culver
City are each 4-2. The Eagles fell to Santa
Monica 4-2, but rebounded by soundly defeating
Hawthorne 8-0.
