Main Street Needs a Boost
I’d like to commend Scot Nicol and other
City Council members and candidates for trying
to generate more business and vibrancy
for our Main Street.
I have the good fortune of working with
community developers and traffic engineers
all across America, and it’s a proven fact
that angled parking and reduced speeds in
a downtown district create more opportunities
for shoppers, diners and pedestrians to
enjoy more time—and spend more dollars.
This approach will add more parking spots,
and it’s safer for everyone, too.
I’ve seen angled parking work wonders in
downtown Boulder, Scottsdale, West Palm
Beach and even Manhattan Beach. It will
work in El Segundo, too.
Please don’t equate this concept to the
poorly implemented road diet on Vista del
Mar. That street is a high speed thoroughfare,
and there is no retail or businesses along that
ocean stretch that could have benefitted in
the way our Main Street will.
I know our downtown businesses agree
Main Street needs more vibrancy and an
economic boost. Angled parking will be a
big step in the right direction.

Response to Robert Grant’s
School Walkout
You clearly have not had teenagers. They
don’t usually do what “adults” tell them to
do (not in the huge numbers of those joining
protests) unless they ask for help. I suggest
you try watching real news and not the “talk
shows” who are just entertainment. I apologize
if I am insulting you (not my intent) I just
think you are a little misguided.
I can understand why kids don’t want to
have to worry about being killed at school
and I wholeheartedly support them all.

28 year El Segundo resident and
mother of a former teenager •

EIR Public Review of
Potential Desalination Project
The draft environmental impact report (EIR)
for West Basin Municipal Water District’s (West
Basin) propossed ocean water desalination
facility is available for public review and
comment for a 60-day period through May 25.
The report is available online at www.
westbasin.org/desal with two public
meetings scheduled at Richmond Street
Elementary School (615 Richmond St.,
El Segundo) on April 25 from 6 p.m.
to 9 p.m. and May 12 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The desalination project would produce 20
to 60 million gallons per day of drinking water
from the ocean. The proposed project site is
an existing 33-acre industrial-zoned location
within the El Segundo Generating Station at
301 Vista Del Mar. The project consists of a
desalination facility with membrane filtration
and reverse osmosis technology; an ocean
water intake system to deliver ocean water to
the facility; a brine discharge system to return
concentrated seawater back to the ocean; and
a drinking water delivery system to distribute
the drinking water produced to the local and
regional water supply systems.
The draft EIR describes potential direct, indirect
and cumulative environmental impacts of
the project. The report examines potential impacts
on aesthetics, lights and glare; air quality;
terrestrial biological resources; cultural resources;
energy; geology and soils; greenhouse
