Butler started and overpowered the Normans
with her control and off-speed pitches. She
gave up just two hits, struck out seven and
walked none.
El Segundo scored three runs in the second
inning, nine runs in the third inning and
three more in the fourth inning to finish
Beverly Hills off. Adri Hebert continues to
defy opposing pitchers and was 3-4 as well
as a single shy of hitting for the cycle. She
had a home run, triple, double and a walk.
Shanai Owens was 2-2 and scored three times,
Katie Croxall was 2-4 with three RBIs and
Kaela Little had a bases-clearing double in
the third inning.
In the second game Kaili Reitano stymied
the Normans with a one-hit shutout,
walking three and striking out eight as the
Eagles won 18-0 in a run-rule shortened
five inning game. The rout was on in the
second inning, highlighted by Kaela Little’s
three-run inside the park home. In the third
inning the Eagles touched the Normans for
four more runs, including RBI singles by
Hebert, Little and Leah Abitante. The ninerun
fourth inning lasted nearly 25 minutes.
Leading the way were Mya Bennett, Kelly
Carignan and Laila Phillips who each had
RBI singles, and Sophia Marrero who had
a bases-loaded triple.
El Segundo needed a win over Culver
City to be in contention for a share or even
an outright league title. The Eagles took
advantage of the Centaurs’ shoddy play and
came up with four first inning runs on their
way to a 7-1 win. In the four-run first inning
El Segundo had just two hits, including an
RBI single by Marrero. In the fourth inning,
Mya Bennett’s RBI single gave her team a
5-0 lead. In the fifth inning, Marrero drew a
walk and scored on a wild pitch. Croxall’s
run-scoring single capped the scoring.
Reitano pitched a four-hitter with one of
those being a home run in the fifth inning.
She had control issues early on, but worked
out of a bases-loaded jam and got out of
another inning in which the Centaurs had
runners in scoring position.
With the Ocean League really a two-team
race, the Eagles are looking for their second
consecutive league championship. This week,
they play on the road at Edison on Tuesday
and today at Bay League power Mira Costa
at 3:15 p.m. They’ll wind up their league
schedule at home next Thursday at 3:15 p.m.

for Three-Peat
El Segundo is looking to win a third consecutive
Ocean League title. It isn’t the Eagles’
fault they’ve been forced into a playing in a
league that lacks competitiveness. Nevertheless
they are on the verge of winning the program’s
37th league title, including three of the past
four Ocean League titles. The Eagles inched
closer to their league-winning goal with a
sweep of Culver City by scores of 9-0 and 6-1.
In the first game, Aiden McRoberts tossed
his third shutout of the year. McRoberts has
been one of the South Bay’s biggest surprise
pitchers this season. The crafty junior righthander
is 5-2 on the year with an eye-popping
0.62 ERA. His control is one of his biggest
assets, as he has walked just eight batters in
44 innings. Against the Centaurs McRoberts
gave up three hits, walked two and struck out
eight. El Segundo pounded out 14 hits, led by
Dylan Marquez-Wasson. He went 3-3 with a
triple and two RBIs, while Ethan Burner went
2-4 with two RBIs.
In the second game, the Eagles rolled out
Quin Kirsten to the mound. The El Segundo
ace was masterful, scattering seven hits and
allowing only an unearned run in the first
inning. He improved to 5-1 on the year and
lowered his ERA to 0.82.
Trailing 1-0 in the first inning, the Eagles
scored four runs on three hits. Burner doubled
to open the inning and then Benny Casillas
walked. Matt Romero and Cameron Dornblaser
had RBI singles and Nick Villa added a tworun
double to make it 4-1.
In the fourth inning, the Eagles extended
their lead with Ian Bonham’s RBI double to
make it 5-1. In the fifth inning, Romero was
hit by a pitch and later scored on Villa’s RBI
single for an El Segundo 6-1 lead.
With the win, the Eagles improved to 6-0 in
the Ocean League entering this week’s games
with Lawndale. El Segundo has mauled the
opposition by outscoring their Ocean League
opposition 62-5 and faces a Cardinals team
that has scored just 14 runs in Ocean League
games. The Eagles conclude their Ocean
League schedule next week at Santa Monica
on Tuesday. The final game will be played next
Thursday at LMU at 4:30 p.m.in conjunction
with the Brett Mendoza Memorial Classic.
It is part of a doubleheader with the second
game between Palos Verdes and Peninsula
taking place at 7 p.m. •
Adri Hebert is one of the top hitters in the South Bay with a .558
batting average.
Katie Croxall, who leads the team with 27 hits, doubles against
Beverly Hills.
Benny Casillas laces a single against Culver City and later scored.
