Chase Waite Keeping Others
Happy, Hopeful and Positive
Story and Photo by Gregg McMullin
For the past four years, when you roam
the halls of El Segundo High School, you
were bound to run into Chase Waite. There
are many adjectives to describe Chase, but
the best may be the kindest person you’ll
ever meet. His charm, friendly demeanor
and smile he greets each person with are the
qualities of the well-known boy next door.
Chase has many interests, and he makes
each day count. Unlike many teens these days
Chase takes each day seriously and makes
each one of them count. He knows that the
best impression is the first impression. He’s
a good student and very athletic, but those
who know him say he’s a great friend who
likes to make others smile.
These days Chase wakes up each morning
to check his email for his school work,
and he stays in touch with his teachers and
friends. His four year overall 3.6 GPA is a
tribute to his academia. Of all of his classes,
Chase’s favorite is the Drama class, which
he’s been in for four years. “My favorite class
is the Drama class because of my teacher
Mr. Sidwell.”
Chase in the 2019 ESHS Fall Drama Production of “Love Sick” by John Cariani. The Scene is called Obsessive/Impulsive: about a
woman and a man who fall in love at first sight.
Chase got involved with Drama in his
freshman year and he was addicted. “I joined
Drama in my freshman year because one of
my friends asked me to be in it.” According
to him, it was one of the best decisions that
he had ever made. Chase added, “The class is
amazing and I feel like I have another family.”
Chase has been in seven shows since his
freshman year and he loved each one of
them. One of his favorite shows was called
“Brothers Grimm Spectaculathon.” In the
show, he had a total of nine roles, with
one of the scenes having him switching
through six characters. The numerous
characters he played would have been a
challenge for most to remember all the lines
but not for Chase. He said, “For me, it’s
a little easier because I have a method of
going over the lines multiple times until I
remember the lines without having a script In
hand.” He added, “Mr. Sidwell is an amazing
director and he has truly made me a better
actor and person in life.” He stays involved
and active in the school’s Drama Club by
being elected it’s Vice President. He says
it’s his way of giving back to the club and
his second family.
He plans on attending El Camino College
using the South Bay Promise pathway for
two years to attain his Associate’s degree.
“The plan is to transfer to another college
to finish my degree. I don’t have a Major
yet, but I am interested in pursuing Sports
Broadcasting and doing acting on the side.”
If he doesn’t go into sports broadcasting,
he might think about being a public address
announcer. He did some P.A. work at the
Eagles football games. He wasn’t intimidated
by something he’d never done before and
learned very quickly.
Chase stays active these days by shooting
baskets, playing the keyboard and staying
involved in the Special Effects Club. Though
he hasn’t played basketball for the Eagles,
he recently made the Los Angeles Elite
Basketball club team. He would play every
day after school with friends, but now he’s
been shooting by himself. He got involved in
the Special Effects Club, thanks to his best
friend, Ray. They are currently working on
a scary horror movie.
Chase’s greatest passion is making others
smile. So when he’s not studying lines for a
play, you can find him in writing funny and
entertaining rap lyrics. “I love to write funny
and entertaining rap songs that I post on my
YouTube Channel called ‘The DAWG Vlog.’”
He added,” it’s fun to make my friends smile
and laugh by recording the songs.”
Chase is very close with his family and
you can be sure they have plenty of family
nights these days. They do so by watching
movies, playing board games together and
listening to Chase play the keyboard.
Chase is upbeat about the world and life,
in general, these days. He, like the rest of
us, sees the challenges and misses going out
to eat with his family, having the freedom
to hang out with his friends and attending
school in general. But he says, “This bump in
the road of history will soon be a memory.”
When the class of 2020 has their reunions,
they will most likely reminisce about their four
years in high school, especially their senior
year. Many people will be remembered, but
few will stand out for what they meant to the
school and their classmates. Chase Waite is one
of those who will be remembered as a best
friend who made them smile and feel good
about themselves. He said, “I love to make
people laugh and I hope everyone remembers
me as a happy and positive guy.” No doubt,
Chase has left his imprint of keeping others
happy, hopeful and positive. •

Overview of a Great Season
By Anthony Gomez
The El Segundo Boys 10U Premier
All-Star team had an fantastic run this
year. The team was made up of Forward
Jace Keith, Midfielders Daniel Bass,
Preston Milne-Castro, and Xavier Gomez.
The backend was led by CDM Louis
Lappe and Backers Brody Brooks, Elyjah
Green, Rishi Nair, with Max Baker in goal.
The Area 1D tournament (which the 10U
Boys had not won since 2012) included
reigning Western States Champions Manhattan
Beach, Hawthorne, North Redondo,
and South Redondo. After pool play (1-1-2
record; 4 GF/4 GA), the boys exploded
against Hawthorne 6-0, setting up a rematch
in the Championship against Manhattan
Beach, their only loss. Both teams played
extremely physical – the defenses and goalie
play on both sides was incredible. Scoreless
the first three quarters, El Segundo scored
early in the 4th on an own goal created by
Preston Milne-Castro’s corner. But Manhattan
Beach tied it up with minutes left
pushing overtime. El Segundo started fast in
overtime, scoring early when Xavier Gomez
converted a PK. But once again, Manhattan
Beach scored in the waning moments to
force a Shootout! Both teams scored their
first two attempts, then missed their third.
Manhattan Beach would miss their 4th try
before Brody Brooks converted putting Gundo
up 3-2. Manhattan Beach’s final shot was
stonewalled by Louis Lappe, crowning the
El Segundo boys Champs and sending them
to the Section Tournament where they would
eventually fall in the Semifinals. Overall the
boys finished in the Top 16 in the Western
States! It truly was a special run for a special
group of boys. •
