Baseball Team Wins Ocean League
Starts CIF Playoffs
The Eagles split their final regular season
Ocean League games with Santa Monica,
losing 6-1 and then shutting out the Vikings
2-0. It has been another winning season for
the Eagles, who ran their Ocean League record
to 9-1 and 19-8 overall.
In the first game, the Eagles committed four
costly errors leading to three unearned runs. It
may not have mattered since Aiden McRoberts
had his most challenging start this season. The
junior right-hander gave up six runs on nine
hits, but continued to show good control with
just one walk. Benny Casillas’ RBI single that
scored Ian Bonham was the lone highlight
on offense the Eagles could muster up in the
6-1 loss.
In the second game played at LMU, in
conjunction with the Brett Mendoza Memorial
Classic, El Segundo held off Samo 2-0. The
Eagles got a strong performance from Quin
Kirsten, who was magical. He tossed his sixth
complete game and has a scoreless inning streak
that has reached 38 consecutive innings. The
Vikings managed just two hits and a couple
of walks, while the Eagles’ defense played
brilliantly behind their ace on the mound.
El Segundo’s offense was stymied and limited
to seven hits led by Bonham, who was 2-2 with
a run scored. The Eagles scored their first run
in the first inning when Casillas belted a triple
that scored Brendan McAndrews. In the third
inning, Bonham singled and later scored on
Casillas’ RBI single.
The Eagles hit the ball hard, but Santa
Monica’s defense came up with highlight plays
to thwart any El Segundo rally. Matt Romero
hit a ball 380 feet in the gap that was run down
by Samo’s Brett Edwards. Cooper Sutherland
hit a laser line drive that would have scored
Bonham, but shortstop Hunter Van Cott made a
leaping ESPN highlight catch to rob Sutherland
of a hit and El Segundo a run.
El Segundo (19-8) advances to the CIF
Southern Section Division 2 playoffs and hosts
Santa Fe (21-7), the co-first place team from
the Del Rio League, on Friday at 3:15 p.m.
The second round is scheduled for Tuesday
with a possible matchup with Arcadia -- the
top seeded team.

Epic Battle to Samo Advances
to CIF Playoffs
The Eagles had an opportunity to exact some
revenge upon Santa Monica and in the process
win a share of the Ocean League title when
these two teams met. In their first meeting,
Samo won the match in five games. This time
the two teams battled to five games again, but
El Segundo came away losing 23-25, 25-23,
16-25, 25-17, 11-15 and will enter the CIF
playoffs as the second place team.
The Eagles were hampered all match long
with unforced errors and it led to the three
games they lost. The first game was close with
neither team leading by more than three points.
A block by Robby Pedersen tied the game at
19-19. The Eagles’ momentum continued with
a hit by Kainalu Hekekia to give his team a
23-22. The Vikings would go on to score the
next three points and take game one.
Game two was another tight one with
seven lead changes and some extended rallies.
During one point, Casey Lund dove for a dig
for a save and Logan Sharp’s tough dig saved
on another point. Nakoa Parrish pounded a
point past the Vikings front line to give the
Eagles a 14-11 lead. Pederson’s block gave
the Eagles a 20-18 advantage, but Samo
wouldn’t buckle. Samo’s Ethan Burk’s kill
gave his team a 23-22 lead. El Segundo scored
the next three points, thanks to Parrish and
Pedersen and an unforced error for a 25-23
game two win.
Game three was all Santa Monica, thanks
to some big hits from Percy Bickford, and
the Vikings pulled away and won 25-16. El
Segundo took control of game four from
the start. Pedersen’s block made it 11-6 and
Michael Lynch’s thundering hit made it 14-8.
Parrish finished off the Vikings in the fourth
game with a perfectly placed hit and the Eagles
won 25-17. Game five to decide the match was
filled with action and long rallies, but Santa
Monica came away with a 15-11 win and in
the process won the Ocean League title.
The Eagles entered the CIF Southern Section
Division 2 playoffs Tuesday when they
played host to Bishop Montgomery. A win
would send them to the second round with a
match between the winner of the Beckman/
Tustin match tonight at 6 p.m.
