El Segundo Cares
Thank you El Segundo, you support to
veterans at the West Los Angeles VA Hospital
has been very generous. We are now
supporting another need, housing for the
homeless, sponsored by U.S. Vets.
There are numerous locations, but we’ve
chosen Inglewood and Long Beach. Long Beach
houses singles, families, abused women with
children and their needs are what we give to the
hospital, plus household goods and items for the
children. They also need treats and soft drinks for
those not ready to leave the streets. Inglewood’s
goal is to help men find jobs, to regain their
health. They refer the women to Long Beach.
For those interested, check out www.

However you can give, El Segundo Cares
thanks you for helping vets in need.

“Progressives” Enable Rapists
My friend Deborah was brutally beaten and
raped while alone in her real estate office by
a four-time rapist wearing an electronic monitor
- on early release from prison again. This
was enabled by soft-on-crime “progressive”
Democrat laws, policies, spending priorities,
and judicial appointments. He served only 3
years for rape #1, and 3-1/2 for rape #2.
Given the circumstances, Deborah would
have successfully protected herself with the
handgun she tried to buy and should have had
before her rape. But she was wrongly disarmed
by the Democratic party’s “background check”
law. More than 99% of initial background
check rejections are in error, and California
has a dangerous 10-day “waiting period” to
receive a legally purchased firearm. In contrast,
most criminals buy their guns illegally, as with
drugs, without a background check or waiting
period - and the rest can do the same.
The rapist parked his van next to a “Neighborhood
Watch” sign. When attacked, self-defense
with a firearm is safest and most effective -
better than signs and faster than 911. Under
California Government Code section 845, all
government entities, officials, and employees
are not liable for a failure to provide any or
adequate police protection. An entire unarmed
family can be murdered in two minutes, before
police can arrive. It’s our right and responsibility
to own firearms to protect our families, but we
must vote out soft-on-crime, anti-self-defense,
anti-gun “progressive” Democrat politicians
to keep that right and to keep murderers and
rapists in prison.

Fake News
There was fake news in the 4/26/2018 Herald
(“El Segundo Moms Lead the Charge to
Prevent Gun Violence”). When “gun safety”
is used to describe organizations or laws,
it’s usually fake news that should have used
“anti-gun fake safety”. Leftist anti-self-defense,
anti-gun organizations and politicians use “gun
safety” and “gun violence” labels to hide their
true agenda when they lobby and campaign to
restrict and ban self-defense firearms.
Professor Gary Kleck’s research found there
are 2.5 million defensive gun uses per year
by ordinary Americans, about five times the
criminal misuses, usually without firing; defense
with a firearm is significantly safer and more
effective than any other method, including
non-resistance; and Americans armed with
firearms create significant crime control and
deterrent effects that are at least as effective
as the entire criminal justice system (police,
courts, and prisons), that benefit everyone including
those who choose not to own firearms.
Leftists use “gun violence” to cover-up the
overwhelming defensive gun uses, and that the
worst mass-murders did not use firearms. 87
people were murdered in a few minutes with
$1 of gasoline and two matchsticks in the
Happy Land Social Club arson fire in New
York City. 44 people including 38 students were
murdered and 58 injured in the Bath School
Bombing in Michigan. 168 people including
19 children were murdered and more than 500
injured in the Oklahoma City Bombing. And
2,977 were murdered and over 6,000 injured
using box-cutters and hijacked aircraft in the
9/11/2001 terror attack.

Everytown
“Everytown for Gun Safety” (EGS) is not
a “grassroots”, “gun safety”, or non-partisan
organization in practice. It’s a Democrat-aligned
anti-gun campaign and lobbying organization
based in New York City. Billionaire Michael
Bloomberg, the 7th-richest person in the U.S.
and the 10th richest person in the world, created
Everytown in 2014 by merging “Mayors Against
Illegal Guns” (MAIG), which he co-founded
in 2006, and “Moms Demand Action for Gun
Sense in America”. Bloomberg pledged in 2014
to bankroll Everytown with approximately $50
million. By 2017, Bloomberg reportedly spent
$135 million on anti-gun causes.
As NYC Mayor, Bloomberg pushed through
“Soda Control” - a ban on “large capacity soda
cups” - which the court overturned. Bloomberg
was a Democrat until he switched to run for
NYC mayor as a Republican. He left the Republican
Party after winning his second term.
Everytown’s campaign arm, the EGS Action
Fund, makes political contributions to mostly
Democratic candidates who support Bloomberg’s
anti-gun agenda. In 2015, Everytown’s Action
Fund spent more than $2 million on TV ads
promoting Democrats for the Virginia state senate,
in Bloomberg’s campaign to turn Virginia
from a swing state into a reliable Democratic
stronghold. In September 2017, Everytown
committed to spend at least another million
dollars to help elect Democrats in Virginia.
Everytown heavily funded the March 24,
2018 anti-gun fake “grassroots student” marches
that were orchestrated to support the Democrat
campaigns for the 2018 midterm elections.
In contrast, the NRA is a true “gun safety”
organization saving lives since 1871.

Super CPR Saturday
See Letters, page 4
By James Carver,
El Segundo Fire Department
There are over 350,000 out-of-hospital
cardiac arrests each year and the outcome for
about 90 percent of cardiac arrest victims is
death. I had a sudden-death heart attack. Due
to family members knowing the cardiac chain
of survival, early recognition, early CPR, early
defibrillation and access to the EMS system,
I was one of the lucky ones and I survived.
Do you know the signs and symptoms of a
heart attack? What would you do if someone
you know was having a heart attack? In the
1960s, the number of people dying from heart
attacks was identified as a major public health
problem. To reduce the number of lives lost
from heart attacks, the paramedic program
was started, providing life-saving medical
treatment in the field, away from the hospital.
Also, the American Red Cross and American
Heart Association started teaching the public
on what to do when someone’s heart has
stopped, also known as cardiopulmonary
resuscitation or CPR. Since then millions of
people, from doctors to teachers and welders
to students, have learned about CPR. Knowing
the symptoms of a heart attack and getting
advanced medical care within the first hour
when someone is experiencing the symptoms
of a heart attack could save a life.
To help continue the tradition of training
the public about CPR, the El Segundo
Fire Department and American Red Cross
host the annual Super CPR Saturday, a day
you can learn about CPR. This year, Super
CPR Saturday will be held at El Segundo
City Hall, 350 Main St., on May 19, 2018,
with classes starting at 8 a.m., 9 a.m. and
10 a.m. Chevron, Continental Development,
McDonald’s, NRG and Teledyne are again
sponsoring Super CPR Saturday this year.
At Super CPR Saturday, you can take a
free adult CPR class. As with last year, you
can take a blended class where you can go
to the American Red Cross website, complete
an online interactive class, bring your
online certificate to Super CPR Saturday and
take the skills session. Or, you can attend a
lecture at City Hall to learn about CPR and
then take the skills session.
So you might think that you had CPR
training years ago and you remember how
to do it. CPR is not something we do every
day. Chances are that if you ever perform
CPR, it will be on a family member and not
a stranger. The more you practice something,
the easier it is to do during a stressful situation.
But CPR is not the only life-saving
technique you will learn. You will also learn
how to breathe for someone who is not
breathing, how to open a blocked airway
safely when someone is choking, and what
to do in an emergency.
To register for a class, go to the Eventbrite
website and select El Segundo Fire Department,
Super CPR Saturday. Registration is
ongoing to May 18. Remember, American
Red Cross CPR certification is good for two
years. So if you need to update your certification,
now is the time to take the class. Don’t
wait. The life you might save could be that
of one you love. Learn CPR! •
