Letters from page 3
Despite the teachings in our home - never
to look at a gun if a friend shows them,
never to touch one, even if they are told it
is not loaded, my boys were still curious.
Ultimately, gun safety is our responsibility
as adults, not the responsibility of children.
You can be sure I will have that uncomfortable
conversation with parents from here
on out. I feel fortunate to be a part of a gun
violence prevention group concerned with
the 96 Americans who are killed with guns
every day. Thankfully, my boys did not fall
into that statistic – that day.
– Melissa McCaverty
Moved by Love Not Fear
As an El Segundo resident and founding
member of the South Bay Chapter of Moms
Demand Action for Gun Sense in America,
my family and I have benefited greatly
from the uplifting spirit of the group’s call
to action. We have participated in Farmer’s
Market outreach, Be SMART gun safety
training and large community rallies, among
other events. When asked through a social
media post why I chose to join this group, I
responded as follows: “I am here because I
choose to be moved by love rather than fear.
I have a moral obligation to share what time
and energy I have to help create communities
that exude, not fear and violence, but peace
and love.” At a time when fear tactics are
being used to divide, Moms Demand Action
is providing a life-affirming and energizing
alternative through education and advocacy
and for that I am a very grateful ‘Gundo mom.

Wants Atmosphere
of Learning Not Fear
I was delighted to see the informative write
up about the new Moms Demand Action group
forming in the South Bay. It’s so exciting to
see young parents (and non-parents) getting
involved with our community. Too often, the
pressures of work, kids, school can mean that
community involvement just doesn’t happen.
And to focus on a topic which, unfortunately,
is something that is present in our community
is really important. This hit home for me the
other day when my kids’ preschool (we’re
talking babies to 5 years old) did a lock
down drill. Now, this is a preschool that has
stringent security in place already – key codes
to enter, no tailgating allowed, see something/
say something sort of place – and we all
know each other. So the fact that they are
now seeing the need for lock down drills, and
they are needing to explain this to kids who
haven’t yet realized that dinosaurs aren’t alive
today… it’s scary. I don’t want my children
to grow up in an atmosphere of fear when it
should be an atmosphere of learning. So – I
fully support the mission of this group – to
advocate for common-sense gun laws.
Keep your guns for hunting and self-defense,
but make a real effort to keep them out of
the wrong hands. Especially the hands that
would use them on a preschool.
