would spend around $172,000 yearly, for
seven years, to finance the field construction.
According to Silvers, the proposed creative
financing plan could save the District about
$200,000, as opposed to selecting other
options.
Juan Cabrillo Elementary Principal Lisa
Baggio quickly spoke to the Board regarding
a conference her administrative team recently
attended that she felt was extremely valuable
for the District. The conference was geared
towards ramping up the development of tiered
intervention programs that would support all
student needs. Baggio said that while Wiseburn
was already implementing a somewhat
similar program, attendees at the conference
were inspired by the presentation and left
with the understanding that the education
process needs to be constantly redesigned
to meet all students’ needs.
In member reports, Dr. Neil Goldman
spoke of the “magic in the classroom and
the difference-makers that we are all supporting,”
noting teacher appreciation week.
Board members Nelson Martinez and Roger
Banuelos gave kudos to all District teachers,
and Kaneda thanked the teachers. She noted
that as 2018/19 winds down, every year is
a new opportunity. She mentioned the accomplishments
in Wiseburn, spotlighting the
“big things and a ton of little things” that
sometimes go unnoticed.
In his comments, Silvers spoke about the
“little things” that had influenced him to
become a teacher and had made a major
impact on his educational life. He cited the
“positive, overt and subtle messages that are
going out to our kids” to help them feel “safe
and secure.” He also touted recent District
musical performances. “The kids and teachers
are phenomenal,” he said. He also mentioned
the high attendance at a recent elementary
family math night and the continued rampup
of school site safety. “What we are doing
here is good,” Silvers said.
After the members and administrators gave
their reports, the Board got down to the nuts
and bolts, approving various change orders as
the construction work continues at Wiseburn
High School.
“Everyone who remembers his own education remembers teachers, not methods and techniques.
The teacher is the heart of the educational system.”

retirement of 25-year employee Anita Collins,
who will soon be leaving her administrative
duties at Anza Elementary School. Anza
Principal Alberto Paredes emailed, “Anita is
an invaluable member of Anza. No matter
how busy she is, she will always stop what
she is doing to help someone in need. We are
all going to miss her.” Silvers called Collins
“an absolute pillar” of the school and District.
He called her retirement a “tremendous loss
to the organization” that will leave “a gaping
hole” in the Anza educational community.

open house dates at Cabrillo and Burnett, with
the next School Board meeting calendared
for Thursday evening, May 30. •
