The Dodgers made the list too. They’ve
added 866 paid admission per game over last
season. Milwaukee’s Brewers, another playoff
team from last season, gained about the same
number as L.A: 896. The Brewers play in a
climate-controlled domed stadium, where fans
watch games without braving the wind and
cold that the league says has contributed to
smaller crowds, including at Yankee Stadium.
Attendance in the Bronx is down 2,763 per
game, and players in early-April games wore
insulated headgear under their ball caps.
Teams in the NL West other than San
Francisco are doing better than most, ESPN’s
data shows. The Colorado Rockies who play
in a high-altitude outdoor stadium, are down
1,331 fans per game through the first 20 home
meetings, while the Arizona Diamondbacks
in their desert ballpark with retractable roof
have only lost an average of 316 fans per
game in 2019.
The Biggest Losers
Besides the Dodgers’ rival, the Giants,
teams with the biggest drop in attendance
have been:
Toronto Blue Jays, 130.948 (5,952 per
game); the Kansas City Royals, 104,821
(4,193 per game); and unexpectedly, the
Houston Astros who’ve lost 83,197 in paid
attendance at home despite being in first
place and being one of the baseball’s best
teams this year. Another team you wouldn’t
expect to be going in reverse is the Chicago
Cubs, whose home crowds have dipped by
12,000 over the first 22 games. Per game,
that is 549 empty seats.
League attendance at all 30 major league
ballparks declined last season by 4 percent,
which the league blamed on poor April weather
that forced 54 games to be cancelled. •
City Council from front page
existing events (i.e. the Chamber’s annual
Salute to the Military) and programs (an
affordable housing initiative in conjunction
with the Department of Defense, Los Angeles
Air Force Base and City of Redondo Beach).
Council discussion on the matter brought up
connecting potential activities with holidays
such as July 4 (though troops are usually out
of town during this period) and Memorial
Day. Staff will return to the Council with
recommendations at a future date.
Presentations at the beginning of Tuesday’s
meeting included Fire Chief Chris Donovan’s
introduction of new Battalion Chief Deena
Lee; recognition of May 19-25 as National
Public Works Week; and certificate handouts
to members of the local AYSO All Stars team
(Region 92-U12 Girls Division), who made it
to the state tournament in March and braved
inclement weather while being the only El
Segundo team to qualify.
The fourth presentation came from Hawthorne
Police Chief Michael Ishii, who
presented the El Segundo Police Department
with a plaque and a heartfelt thanks for
the latter’s “swift and immediate” mutual
aid response last month in the wake of an
officer-involved shooting. Shot in the leg by
a man with a rifle, the Hawthorne officer is
now doing okay, Ishii reported. He went on
to laud the relationships his department has
with ESPD and surrounding agencies and the
importance of working together to “address
difficult circumstances.”
Ishii also noted that the wife of the abovementioned
officer also works for Hawthorne
PD and happened to be in the midst of
participating in the Run to Remember race
that pays tribute to fallen first responders.

shooting while she was in the middle of
