Andrew Graven Earns Eagle Rank
for Boy Scout Troop 267
One of the oldest Boy Scout troops in the
South Bay can boast another troop member
earning his Eagle rank. Earning the rank of
Eagle is one of the most prestigious and
special moments for a scout. Since 1912,
when Arthur Eldred earned the first Eagle
Scout ranking, one President and 38 astronauts
have also earned the top ranking of the Boy
Scouts of America.
In 1924 El Segundo started Troop 267 and
is one of the oldest troops in the district. Since
its first meeting 93 years ago Troop 267 has
pinned 75 Eagle scouts. George Eason was
the first one to earn his way onto a special
plaque inscribed with all 75 Eagle scouts
including its latest one, Andrew Graven.
Graven started his scouting 12 years ago
and went through the journey. Throughout
his scouting career he fulfilled all the requirements

including his Eagle project. His Eagle
project was building a catapult that studied
speed, angle, distance, force and other measurements
when an object was fired from it
on a football field.
Andrew Graven follows in the footsteps
of his grandfather and father who also had
successful scouting careers. He will attend
Cornell University in the fall studying math
and computer science.

Rachael Wang and Kristine Shen of El
Segundo High School were two of the five
students selected by Northrop Grumman from
a talented pool of applicants from across the
country to receive the Paul Marchisotto Scholarship
this year. The annual scholarship awards
$1,500 to each winner and honors the late vice
president who worked for Northrop Grumman
for 20 years before he passed away in 2006.
Marchisotto was deeply involved in the
Northrop Grumman High School Involvement
Program (HIP). The program has provided nearly
7,000 students the opportunity to receive “handson”
job training while earning high school
credit since its inception in 1971. This year five
El Segundo High School students graduated from
the 17-week program with a $300 scholarship:
Thomas Lynch, Jr., Matthew Paysse, Kristine
Shen, Kristin Villanueva and Rachael Wang.
In addition, four of these students simultaneously
participated in the South Bay
Workforce Investment Board’s Aero-Flex
pre-apprenticeship program. The “earn and
learn” program acts as a compliment to the
students’ intensive internship by providing
work readiness and technical skills training.
As a reward for completing both programs,
the students receive a $500 stipend.
The College and Career Center at ESHS
coordinates student internships with local
businesses in a variety of industries. Students
are encouraged to visit the College and Career
Center regularly to become familiar with all of
the resources available to them—it’s never too
early to begin planning for college admissions
or to gain some valuable work experience or
training.
The College and Career Center is open to
assist students during snack time, lunch and
after school on a drop-in or appointment basis
via sign-up sheets in Room 105. For more
information about the services offered, please
visit the ESHS website Career Readiness Resources
link found on the “Counselors” page.

The Aerospace Corporation Announces
New Chief of Government Relations
The Aerospace Corporation (Aerospace)
announced last week that the Honorable
Frank A. Rose has joined the company as
the new chief of government relations. In
this role, he will lead the organization’s
educational efforts to Congress, the executive
branch, and state and local government
officials. He will also conduct outreach
activities for Aerospace’s Center for Space
Policy and Strategy, which provides objective
analysis and comprehensive research to
ensure well-informed, technically defensible,
and forward-looking space policy.
“Frank brings a wealth of knowledge
in space policy, defense, and international
security to Aerospace,” said Jamie Morin,
vice president at Aerospace and executive
director of the Center for Space Policy and
Strategy. “He is a trusted expert on space
and strategic issues, with deep credibility
across the U.S. government and with key
stakeholders engaged in space issues.”
Prior to joining Aerospace, Rose served as
assistant secretary of state and deputy assistant
secretary for space and defense policy in the
Bureau for Arms Control, Verification and
Compliance at the U.S. Department of State.
Previously, he was a staff member for the
Committee on Armed Services and for the

placement and related employment
services to expedite the reintegration of
homeless and formerly incarcerated veterans
into the labor force. Veterans with families
and those who are at risk of homelessness
also qualify for services.
The SBWIB will focus on employing many
veterans within the construction industry due to
the current high demand for job seekers in the
South Bay area with numerous major projects
taking place; including the Los Angeles Football
Stadium and Entertainment District at Hollywood
Park. The Inglewood football stadium is
projected to provide more than 3,500 on-site
jobs during construction and more than 10,000
support jobs by the time it is completed.
For those job seekers that may not fit within
the construction sector the SBWIB will place
them into another priority industry. SBWIB’s
Executive Director, Jan Vogel stated, “Our
partnership with U.S. Vets is very important to
us and we are honored to be able to receive
this funding and help homeless veterans gain
meaningful employment.”
