pace--especially in the power play.
The difference in pool size was also a
challenge for the team. Hale said, “The pool
is 30 meters long opposed to the 25-yard
pools we play in for El Segundo. When
you are subbed out you don’t have enough
energy to swim back to the bench, so you
have to swim straight to the wall and make
the walk back.”
The team started out 4-0 and faced Serbia
for a real showdown in the tournament.
Again they came out with very impressive
speed, physicality and coordination. The
match remained close throughout until the
last 44 seconds when Team USA took the
lead for good. Those final 44 second were
an intense defensive battle that Hale was in
the thick of, but he and his teammates held
on for an 8-7 win.
Hale expressed what making the national
team meant for him and how it will help him
and his teammates this season. “Hopefully
from a physical standpoint, the 25-yard pools
will feel like nothing or at least not as challenging
towards the end of a game,” he said
“Every time you hop in the pool, everything
you’ve done before then is preparation for
the next moment. It’s a vicarious experience
and that’s the psychological part of it. This
trip to Serbia has given me the experience
defending against a rapid pace I haven’t
experienced before.”
Hale hopes the experience of playing at the
international level will help his high school
team be successful this season. •
