Christmas Characters
(Part 1)
We all have played “Santa” at this
time of the year when we go out of
way to “gift” all those special people
in our lives who made our list. It
sure is a lot easier to “receive” then
to “give” when it’s hard to buy things online
and wait three weeks before it arrives on our
porch and we rush out to bring it inside so
it doesn’t get stolen by the package thieves..
Maybe some of us have felt like Rudolf with a
red nose, an outcast, but comes through in the
clutch. Now, putting ourselves into the nativity
story gives us a whole new way of looking
at the “real” Christmas story. Let’s start with
the cows and the donkeys, who are sometimes
referred to as asses. That’s exactly what we
have been called or felt like many times in
our lives, lowly, no good for nothing beasts.
Consider the little boy, dirty shepherds who
were just trying to do their job by counting
their sheep at night. When out of nowhere some
bright angels woke them up to start singing
and telling them to go see some baby lying
in some messy stable outside some innkeepers
shack. Have you ever felt like Joseph? He’s
the guy who is engaged to this sweet young
thing and she tells him that she’s pregnant. He
says to himself, I can’t remember that night,
I must have had too many cold ones and my
urges got the best of me. Any way rather than
being the disgrace and gossip topic
of the entire village, he just wanted
to send Mary away to have this
child and cover it all up. Have you
ever been accused of wrong when
you know you never did nothing?
We feel so mad when we take the
blame for crap that just happens. I
don’t have the copy space or time
to talk about the other people in
this real nativity story, part 2 and
3 are for future weeks. The bottom line is
that Joseph, the shepherds, and even the asses
never anticipated what was happening to them
at that time and place. They really could never
been prepared for any of the events that they
played a part in. Haven’t we felt the same
way during 2020? Who knew? We are simply
at the mercy of God’s divine intervention to
live through this life and world. I like what I
heard recently, “Some of us are people living
in this world trying to make it to heaven. Not
so. Because of God’s mercy and grace, we
are citizens of heaven serving God and man
in this crazy world.” We are all lowly, dirty,
asses needing divine intervention. We have no
clue what 2021 will bring. All we can do is
relax, have a cold one and try to count all of
our sheep at night. Don’t get too dirty as we
roll around in this muddy, mucky, monstrosity
called 2020. Look to the hills, that’s where
we hear good news of great joy of a Savior
who has been born. Christmas joy to you my
friends and loyal readers!
