He was a troubled child and he made a lot of trouble for the Police Department and I think that now, a year after his passing, I think it’s so appropriate to be back here working with the Torrance Police Department, fulfilling my grandfather’s life mission of making a difference in the lives of children. So I am honored to have this opportunity, thanks to the LA Police Department and A Chance for Children that through the Louis Zamperini Foundation, I can continue to make a difference,” said Clay Zamperini. Heidi Stoecklein, Senior Lead Officer, Los Angeles Police Department, Office of the Chief of Police said, “This project has been an incredible partnership not only with the LAPD but with A Chance for Children, the community, and our kids. In 2013 we opened up our first My Little Free Library in South LA and this has become a centerpiece for our community engagement and fostering those relationships with our community. I can’t tell you how warm my heart is every time I walk by a Little Free Library and see an officer reading to a child and pausing from their busy, crazy day just to spend that time with that child. I am sure they will remember that forever.” Then Tai Collins, Founder and Executive Director of A Chance for Children spoke and said, “A Chance for Children has been around for 25 years and we have had a 22 year relationship with the LAPD. As I moved to one of the new stations, I met Heidi and we had lunch one day and over lunch – with another friend, we came up with the idea for these libraries and a couple months later we did our first one. And now 25 years later, they are in every police station…I happen to be a great friend of Louis Zamperini. He was part of my foundation for over 20 years. He supported our summer camps and came and spoke to the kids, and if Louis was great or known for anything, it was telling stories and his story started right here in Torrance. And a big part of his story…was running from the police. So what a great way to keep stories alive right here in books at the police station in Louis’ name and I am honored to be here and I know he would love it.” Then, everyone smiled broadly as the elected officials gathered around the yellow and blue wooden encased portable library as a wide red ribbon was stretched from one side to the other while the children lined up in front of the special guests. Mayor Pat Furey cut the ribbon with gigantic scissors and a cheer erupted. Immediately, the children scurried, sitting down on the cool grass in front of the police station to eagerly listen to Erin Bardelas read One Hungry Monster. It was then my mind flashed to my daddy reading to me when I was a child. Oh, how I loved to be read to – anytime, anywhere. The children were enraptured and listened intently. What a beautiful ending to the gentle welcoming of the newest library in Torrance, the Little Free Library. Torrance’s first librarian, Isabel Henderson, is surely smiling! Library target ages are 6 – 16 and all children are welcome to pick out a book to read, or drop one off. Donations are welcome.
