Ryan Kelly of El Segundo rushed for 117 yards and four touchdowns on the night as South fell behind early and took a 24-0 deficit into halftime. South finally got on the scoreboard to start the second half as Gabe Zuniga and Karl Richardson combined for a touchdown, but the fourth quarter was all El Segundo’s as they racked up 13 more points for the eventual 37-6 win. South will try not to let their first loss of the season get to them too much as they look to rebound in their first league game of the season this Friday night at 7:00pm on the road against the Torrance Tartars. Torrance has won three of their last four contests, so Waybright and South have an excellent challenge ahead of them. Torrance High The Torrance Tartars were on a mission last week to avenge their loss to the El Segundo Eagles, who seem to be beating everyone in the Pioneer League one year removed from the division. It came down to the final play of the game, but the Tartars were able to pull out a victory over the Lawndale Cardinals with an eventual 39-34 win at home. Things didn’t look pretty in the first half. After a 6-6 tie in the first quarter, Lawndale jumped out to take a 20-6 lead going into halftime with two touchdowns in the second quarter. Torrance would not be defeated so easily, however, and came out to start the second half with a touchdown of their own. The Tartars were able to outscore the Cardinals 21-7 in the third quarter to tie things up at 27-27 after three quarters. Late in the fourth quarter with things still close at 34-33 in Lawndale’s favor, Torrance began to drive the ball. Star running back Tyree Harris capped the drive off with a touchdown to give the Tartars the 39-34 lead, but there was still time on the clock. Lawndale took to their passing game to attempt a come-frombehind, last second victory. After four straight completions, the Cardinals found themselves on Torrance’s 3-yard line with 3 seconds remaining on the clock. A goal line stand by the Tartars stuffed the Cardinals in their tracks and Torrance eventually came away with the victory. Harris finished with 112 yards and two touchdowns on 13 carries. Follow the Tartars as they begin league play this Friday night in what will be a rivalry game against the South High Spartans. Torrance will attempt to keep their winning ways going and climb in this year’s stout Pioneer League standings. North High Bye week. Next game this Friday vs. West High at 7:00p. • be accepted as continued sponsorship of the John J. Neu Leadership Academy. In other community news, James W. Grant was honored by the City Council for 30 years of public service. The motion passed unanimously honoring Grant, who began work with the City of Torrance in 1981. “The recent donation made by ExxonMobil will fund two leadership programs during the current 2014-2015 school year.” The resolution praised Grant’s work ethic and good example, stating, “James’s exceptional dedication has served as a role model to fellow employees, instilling in them his strong work ethic and a sense of pride in their service for the City….” Mayor Furey has proclaimed the week of October 6 – 10 as “Rideshare Week” in the city of Torrance. Because ridesharing benefits all residents of Torrance, the Council “encourages everyone to carpool, vanpool, ride a bus, or bicycle for their commute to and from work.” Those who employ ridesharing means are also encouraged to help others understand the benefits of ridesharing. The Council also proclaimed October to be Family History Month. Councilmember Mike Griffith reminded the council that the South Bay Genealogical Society “provides genealogical education and guidance through programs, library volunteers, and community outreach programs, and over 2,000 books and periodicals are available to researchers in the genealogical room of the Torrance Katy Geissert Civic Centery Library....” The Council wishes to promote family history among residents and “family history research, education, and the sharing of knowledge to renew the commitment to the concept of family and home.” Lastly, the Council wished also to proclaim that October is National Arts and Humanities Month. The Cultural Arts Commission will be holding the 37th annual Excellence in Arts Awards and other cultural events, which will coincide with National Arts and Humanities Month. • C e r t i f i e d a n d L i c e n s e d P r o f e s s i o n a l s design & construction TOTAL CONCEPT DESIGN & CONSTRUCTION CCL#: 522719 Complete Renovations Outdoor Living Areas Stone Patios, Fireplaces, BBQ’s, Waterfalls & Spas, Water Wise Softscapes Website: www.TCLsouthbay.com Call: 310-371-3368 electric Wise Electric Contracting Service Commercial/Industrial/Residential License No: 785853 Serving El Segundo since 1945 Keith R.
