City Council from front page
seven applications for ADUS compared to
36 over the first year mark.
In other action, the Council adopted a
resolution opposing new off-shore drilling
off the coast of California. Environmental
Committee Chair Tracey Miller-Zarneke
also reported that Chevron has no plans or
interest in such drilling in the future. While
he voted in favor of the resolution, Councilmember
Chris Pimentel considered the item
an overreach. “It’s not our job,” he explained,
to get involved with decisions that are under
state purview.
Miller-Zarneke also made a brief presentation
on a second Council-approved resolution
to oppose proposed state legislation that would
potentially require all residential and commercial
properties to electrify all buildings
and sources of heat energy. While the general
goal of Assembly Bill 3232 is to reduce
greenhouse gas emissions by 40 percent by
2030, language in it paves the way for the
electric-only appliances and would eliminate
customer energy choice. Miller-Zarneke
pointed out that other power sources (e.g.
renewable gas) are viable options.
As brought up during the last meeting, the
Council introduced an ordinance to change
the starting time of regular meetings from 7
p.m. on the first and third Tuesdays of the
month to 6 p.m. Closed sessions would begin
at 4 p.m. instead of 5 p.m. Second reading
and adoption on this item will wait until
April 16 since the Council agreed to cancel
its April 2 meeting due to spring break (as
most of the members have younger kids).
The new meeting times will kick in the third
week of May.•
