are ready and could see plenty of playing time.
This offensive line is talented and athletic-
-and with their experience, they should help
the Eagles move the ball up and down the
field. They may not have the size that some
of their defensive opponents have, but their
dedication and the coaching they’ve received
should balance things out.
The Eagles scrimmaged Pioneer League
favorite West Torrance and did well. Shevlin
was encouraged and optimistic about his team’s
play. “Our defense looked solid and the offense
was able to move the ball,” he said.
Defensive backs Kyle Freeman and Tyler
Villalobos led a secondary that will be tested this
season. “Kyle and Tyler were great and they both
disrupted West’s passing game,” Shevlin added.
On the defensive line, junior defensive end
Alex Ron showed plenty of promise. He’s a
big athlete with good speed. Senior linebackers
Tim Schartz and Jorge Montani demonstrated
their leadership skills and played well.
On offense, junior quarterback Matt Romero
looks to be comfortable in the pocket. When
he needed to scramble, his athletic ability
took over. Arman Sayson, Danny McEntee
and Freeman rushed the ball well behind an
experienced offensive line led by Caravello
and Rogers.
Overall, the Eagles looked prepared and
not a bit intimidated. “We’re young in terms
of experience, but we showed some things
against West that are really encouraging,” said
defensive coordinator Dan Heck.
The season kicks off today (August 31) with
the JV team hosting Leuzinger at 3 p.m. and
the freshman team traveling to Leuzinger to
face the Olympians also at 3 p.m. The varsity
travels to Leuzinger on Friday night for a 7
p.m. kickoff. The Eagles return home next
Friday night to take on Oak Park.
This season’s schedule looks to be a challenge
and all games are slated for 7 p.m. Besides facing
a much-improved Leuzinger team, the Eagles
will face Mira Costa at home on September
15, Torrance and South Torrance on the road,
Culver City on Friday, October 6 at home, and
Beverly Hills and Lawndale on the road. The
Eagles round out their regular season schedule
with the Homecoming game on Friday, October
27 and Senior Night on November 3.
The Eagles will be playing on a new and
improved field this season. During the first part
of the summer, the old turf field was removed
and replaced with an updated field. The company
(Field Turf) that installed the original field
found that the turf was degrading on a more
rapid pace than expected. It offered to install
its top-of-the-line field and included a new
eight-year warranty. The El Segundo School
Board thought over the proposal approved it.
The new field has additional lines for other
sports that was overlooked with the original
field and it has a much more cushioned feel. •
