Still, the scoring wasn’t over and Hawthorne’s
long night continued. The Eagles took over at
midfield after another Hawthorne punt. Sticking
with the running game, McEntee picked up
42 yards on four carries including a five-yard
TD run. The final score of the first half came
on a six-play drive highlighted by runs from
Arman Sayson and Joey Gorte and finished
off by a five-yard run by Dariush Sayson and
a 49-0 lead before halftime.
The Eagles had dominated the first half on
both offense and defense. While the offense
was rolling, it was the defense that had held
Hawthorne to a net 44 yards and one first down
through the first 24 minutes of play.
With a running clock in place, the Eagles
managed to score once more in the fourth
quarter. As the third quarter was winding down,
Hawthorne was operating deep on its side of
the field thanks to the play of Colin McEwan
and Daniel Van Heuven who nearly caused a
safety. Then Joey Gorte intercepted a pass and
returned it to the Hawthorne 32-yard line. Seven
plays later, James Fraelich took a handoff and
powered his way into the end zone for a 55-0
lead. Hawthorne’s only highlight of the game
was a 58-yard catch and run for a touchdown
by Wartell to erase the shutout.
Romero completed five of six passes for 86
yards and two TDs. Danny McEntee rushed
10 times for 98 yards and three TDs, while
Dariush Sayson picked up 30 yards on six
carries with two TDs to lead the Eagles.
The 10th-ranked Eagles wrap up their regular
season by hosting Santa Monica Friday night
at 7 p.m. The El Segundo High football program
will honor its seniors on Senior Night.
A win by the Eagles (7-2) would guarantee a
third place finish and most likely punch their
ticket to the CIF- Southern Section Division
7 playoffs starting next Friday.
Boys Water Polo
The Eagles wrapped up their regular season
by defeating Beverly Hills 13-5, but lost their
final Ocean League match to Santa Monica
7-6. Against Beverly Hills, Kyle Crist led the
way with five goals and great defense. Owen
Hale and Jaden van der Woude had two goals,
while Mason Jaeger, Cameron Dornblaser,
Brian Schodorf and Nolan Young each had
one goal. Caden Kastigar didn’t have too many
opportunities because of the great defensive
effort, but still notched four saves.
The match against Santa Monica was an
emotional one since it was for the Ocean League
title. The offense never got in a rhythm and
couldn’t put the ball in the net. Despite the
tough loss, head coach Riley Brady says he
believes it will wake the team up and the Eagles
will play with more energy and confidence in
the playoffs. Owen Hale led all scorers with
three goals, while Crist, Smith and Jaeger each
scored one goal. Kastigar was strong in goal
and had 10 saves.
The Eagles finished 20-7 overall and 7-1 in the
Ocean League. It marked the fourth consecutive
season the Eagles had won at least 20 games
and won or shared the Ocean League title. El
Segundo opened up the CIF-SS Division 3 first
round game against Edison. Should it win, it
will advance to the second round on the road
to face fourth-seeded Ayala today.
Girls Volleyball Starts
Playoff Run
The Lady Eagles finished their regular season
17-11. They finished third in the Ocean League
with a 6-4 record behind top-ranked Culver City
and third-ranked Santa Monica. They advanced
to the first round of the CIF-SS Division 4
playoffs Tuesday where they faced Downey on
the road. Downey was 18-9 overall and had a
10-match winning streak going into the playoffs.
Should El Segundo win, it will most likely
host the second round game tonight at 7 p.m.
Surf Team Starts Schedule
The El Segundo High surf team got its
season underway with the annual Kickoff
Classic. The South Bay teams get together for
a big contest involving all of the schools. Due
to the number of athletes, prelim heats were
run on two days. Saturday’s surf conditions
were really good and all of the surfers were
ripping. Victor Knopp set the tone by pulling
into an overhead barrel and shooting out to the
amazement of other athletes and fans watching.
Knopp, Jacob Samia, Lukas Roscoe and
Grayson Daley all advanced to round three,
but failed to place third or higher and could
not advance.
On the girls’ side, Sophia Caravello, Porter
Maese, and Aolani Barreto all competed in the
long board division. With the surf pumping, the
Lady Eagles were tested to get through the surf
and put themselves in position to catch good
waves. Aolani advanced through to round two
with a first place finish in her first round heat,
but was unable to advance past round two.
Sophia Caravello pulled off a second place
finish in her first round heat. In round two, she
charged into an overhead set wave that had the
spectators on their feet. She displayed some
wicked moves and scored a third place finish in
round two to advance to the semifinal heat. In
the semis, the wind and surf picked up and
conditions were pretty challenging. Caravello’s
run ended in the semis when the surf’s pounding
ways took it out on her nine-foot long board,
which snapped and ended her day. •
