Appreciates Gregg McMullin
As a longtime ES High School Water Polo
fan, I just wanted to say how much the ES
H20 polo community appreciates the reporting
of this sport. Gregg McMullin is doing a great
job. While I’m talking about doing a great
job, Riley Brady and his wing-man Beau
Blacksten have been doing about as well
as anyone could hope. – Tom Lindsey
V.A. Los Angeles
Hospital Update
We have just completed our seventh trip to
the V.A. Los Angeles Hospital on Wilshire
Blvd. and we would like to sincerely thank
the community for their generous donations
to the veteran patient.
Up until this year, we only managed five
trips. With the holidays coming up, we hope
we can make one more before the year ends.
If not, we are scheduled for our first 2018
on January 11.
Every visit we have made in the past years
remains the same, joyful to see how grateful
the men and women are to review the items.
It also tugs at your heart to see a used pair of
shoes means so much to someone. So many
of them are so dearly touched to receive the
handmade hats and blankets. It’s like they
can’t believe anyone would care enough
about them to do that.

Politically Speaking in
El Segundo Herald
I have been deeply concerned by the
recent articles published in the Politically
Speaking section of the El Segundo Herald,
particularly by the writings of Duane Plank.
Published for two weeks in a row, Duane’s
pieces are not only inflammatory, but they
are riddled with inaccuracies.
Not only did he momentarily drag a US
Senator’s name through the mud using borderline
anti-Semitic rhetoric, but he created a
false equivalence between liberals and sexual
predators, ignoring the long list of Republicans/
conservatives who too stand accused of
sexual harassment and assault. But, I won’t
be so crass as to name names.
This week, he implied that elite college
professors regularly make $500,000 to
teach one class. Again, this is plainly false.
Only nine college professors in the entire
United States make more than $500,000 per
year (Chronicle of Education, 2016). Each of
these professors has contributed significantly to
science, garnered millions of dollars in grants
for their institutions, and substantially raised
the profiles of their respective departments
and universities... in addition to teaching
courses and leading programs at the most
prestigious institutions of higher education
in the world.
I am deeply disappointed in the lack of
journalistic integrity shown by the El Segundo
Herald. I truly hope that the editors will fact
check the stories they run in future issues.
I would appreciate you publishing this
in either the Politically Speaking section or
the Letters section of the El Segundo Herald,
for balance. – Kimberly R. Kelly •
Community Briefs
Tree Musketeers’
Make a Difference Day
October 21 was Make a Difference Day
when communities came together to improve
the lives of others. Here in El Segundo, the
youth managers of Tree Musketeers: the
Next Generation led volunteers to make our
neighborhood a better place. With just enough
tools and 41 enthusiastic volunteers, the group
made a difference by weeding and mulching
all trees on the 400-600 block of Memory
Row. It was a turnout larger than hoped for,
and the volunteer energy was tremendous.
Tree Musketeers attributed the success of the
event to “all the energetic and hard-working
volunteers.” They also lauded the efforts of
El Segundo Recreation and Parks, those who
donated tools and supplies, and the Walker
family for making a generous donation. In
addition to crediting the Tree Musketeers
regulars, they also singled “these awesome
people who worked to keep our communities
healthy, one tree at a time:” Andrew Hemingway,
Anthony Arroyo, Brian Raley, Cameron
Carlton, Cassandra Ledesma, Christine Hille,
Christopher Torres, Destiny Ceja, Dominic
Ku, Grace Walker, Hal Cartagena, Harris
Raley, Hazel Cartagena, Jerry Yankiling,
Kaylani Yankiling, Kerri Arroyo, Koby Wu,
Lean Torres, Marichu Yankiling, Marisa Nakada,
Martina Flores, Merit Abshire, Roberto
Gongora, Sean Jacobe, Vincent Edralin and
Wendy Rodriguez.

An Enforcement Message from ESPD
The following is a message from the
El Segundo Police Department about newly
implemented traffic violation enforcement:
“Due to an increase in complaints about
traffic violations in the residential area, the
El Segundo Police Department has been and
will continue to engage in heavy traffic-related
enforcement. As always, the goal is make our
beautiful city as safe as possible for residents
and visitors. While we always recommend
motorists abide by all traffic laws, the upcoming
enforcement will be impactful to
violators--so now is a good time to think about
your driving habits.” – Source: ESPD •
