Hawthorne Happenings
News for the City of Good
Neighbors from an Old Guy
Named Norb Huber
New Summer
Baseball Program
The Dodgers may not have won a
World Series in a long time and most
people in SoCal can not watch their favorite
team on television, but the Dodger organization
is still very popular amongst their loyal fan
base. In an effort to give back to the greater
Los Angeles area, the Dodger Foundation is
sponsoring youth baseball leagues including
their first summer program here in Hawthorne.
The Dodgers provide complete uniforms to
all players. They also provide the bats, balls,
gloves and catchers gear. The program is for 5
to 8 year olds. The younger kids (5 & 6) bat
off a tee and the older kids (7 & 8) receive 5
pitches from the coach, underhand. There are
96 players divided into 8 teams and the games
are played at Hollypark and Thorpe Fields. The
neat thing is that the parents only have to pay
$10.00 for their child to participate. That’s less
than a cold one at Dodger Stadium.
City Parks Open
The Hawthorne City parks opened this
past Monday with staff at each site supervising
activities. The wading pools are in
operation at all parks and something new has
begun this year. Thanks to a grant, there is
food distribution offered to all children ages
1 to 18. This is another way our Parks and
Communi ty Services Department is
reaching out to help serve our community.
Hamburgers are on the menu for one of the days
this week, but no cold ones, sorry, kids only.
Support Your Local Non-
Profits and Organizations
The firework stands will open this Thursday
at 10 am. The Kiwanis both is located
at Inglewood Ave and Rosecrans in front of
CVS Drug store. There are eight stands in
Hawthorne, all of them are run by a local
club or service organization. Legal fireworks
supports good causes, illegals are the ones that
cause all the problems.
John Baker
Memorial Cruise Night
Join other Hawthorne High Cougar
Alums at a very special night at Foster’s
Freeze on Hawthorne Blvd. In memory
of John Baker, there will be a cruise
night on Saturday, July 21 from 5 to 9
p.m. Come out and get reunited with
your HHS friends. Cougartown is alive and well.
Norb’s NorCal Nuggets
Okay, I need to at least have a new name
for this part of my ramblings. This is the part
that most of you 19 readers skip down to anyway.
You know who you are. You just want to
get to the good stuff where I really tell it like
it is. You want me to go off on my tangents
and say something stupid. We shall see how
dumbfounded I am in retirement or whether the
change of environment has done some changing
to my brain waves and thinking abilities. Maybe
the cleaner air up this way will make me
more normal. How is my retirement going?
The first thing I noticed is the fact that I
don’t HAVE to do anything if I don’t want to
do anything. No more stressing out about getting
to work on time or what tasks that I need
to get done today. I’m sure I will find plenty of
things to do with all of my free time. My old
lady has got me digging through the mountain
of boxes as we unpack and settle into our retirement
home. I already see where God might
use me to help others in this new place. Yes,
I’m blessed with more time to enjoy myself
but the really joy I have in life is in helping
others. Jesus Christ gave us the ultimate
“service to others” model. We read in Mark
9:35 “If anyone would be first, he must be last
of all and servant of all.” The world tells us
to fight back, backbite, tweet obscenities and
“lord it over” others. God loves us and we love
others the way He loves us. Regardless of what
station in life we are at or how untalented or
crazy minded we are, there are always going
to be ways to help and love others. You can
see that retirement hasn’t changed me one bit.
One thing is for sure, I won’t ever retire from
sharing God’s love and having a cold one.

in Hawthorne. When I found this property,
there was nothing else M1 or M2 available.”
M1 Zones are for light industrial development
while M2 Zones are for heavier industrial
facilities. M1 Zones are designed to act as
a buffer between M2 Industrial Zones and
commercial and residential zones.
“I was losing a lot of sleep…I thought we
were going to be out of business,” Dhillon
said of his search for a new location. “But
this thing showed and the landlord was very
agreeable to our use and I can see here that
City planners worked very diligently. It’s a
marriage made in heaven.”
The facility rates are $131 for towing and
$42 per day for storage. Cars are stored
indoors for security purposes. “It has been
a pleasure being a part of the city all these
years,” Dhillon said.
In closing remarks, Commissioner Rula
Alshanableh asked her colleagues to look into
some mechanical units that are exposed on the
roof of the gas station on Prairie Avenue and
Imperial Highway. It is the same gas station
where the group considered installing a communications
mono-palm earlier in the year. •
