Page 4 October 8, 2015 Leuzinger Captures First Win, Receives Mayor’s Cup Leuzinger High’s football team won the Mayor’s Cup by downing rival Hawthorne 34-13 in a non-league football game last Friday at Leuzinger. CIF-Southern Section East Valley Division champion Pomona 51-0 last Friday at Pomona. Santa Monica, in fact, lost all five non-league contests by 44 or more points with their closest games being at 51-7 to Los Angeles Cathedral and 47-3 to Simi Valley Bethel Baptist. Santa Monica also lost its head coach, Travis Clark, who is now head mentor at Lawndale, which raised its record to 4-1 by routing Torrance 49-0 last Friday at Lawndale. Hawthorne will be seeking its first win over the Vikings since 1998. Lawndale Easily Wins Fourth Straight By Joe Snyder Photos by Joe Snyder In last Friday’s Mayor’s Cup football cross town rivalry between host Leuzinger and Hawthorne, it was a race between two squads on who would pick up their first victory of the 2015 season. The Olympians (1-4) got off the starting gate well and went on to down the Cougars 34-13. Leuzinger needed just two plays to get on to the scoreboard. Quarterback Malik Jackson threw a slant pass to Andre Hunt who sprinted 91 yards for a touchdown and an early 7-0 lead. Later in the first period, the combination connected, again, from 32 yards out. The Olympians upped their lead to 21-0 early in the second quarter on running back Lionel Smith’s 21-yard TD run. Midway in the second period, Hawthorne scored its first touchdown on a four-yard quarterback keeper from Marte Mapu cutting Leuzinger’s lead to 21-7. The score remained that way at halftime. Desperate to pull off their first victory, Mapu and the Cougars drove to midfield only to see one of his passes fall into the hands of Olympian linebacker Deanthony Jones who ran down the left sideline for a 50-yard TD and Leuzinger brought its lead back up to 21 points at 28-7. The Cougars (0-5) finally scored their second touchdown when Mapu tossed a 15-yard TD pass to Carlos Jacobo. Kicker Hunter Marquez’s point after touchdown attempt was partially blocked as the ball fell short of the goal post, leaving Hawthorne trailing 28-13 with 1:15 left in the third quarter. Leuzinger capped the scoring when Jackson completed a 12-yard touchdown pass to Jones with 8:28 remaining in the game. “The game was a good outcome for the kids,” Leuzinger head coach Damien Porter said. “We made a lot of penalties and mistakes but they didn’t cost us. We will need to improve on those to do well in league and beat teams like (Torrance schools), North, South and West.” The Olympians open the Pioneer League at West Torrance Friday at 7 p.m. At West last Friday, the Warriors, who were CIF-Southern Section semifinalists the past two seasons and finalists the year before (in 2012), were upset at home by previously winless Carson 34-27. Despite the win, Leuzinger was penalized 20 times for 182 yards and had three turnovers. Jackson completed seven of 10 passes for 149 yards and three touchdowns. For Hawthorne, Mapu completed 16 of 34 passes for 149 yards and one TD. He was intercepted once, that going for the score by Jones. Like the Olympians, the Cougars were plagued with numerous penalties and turnovers. “Turnovers and other mistakes got to us,” Hawthorne head coach Donald Paysinger said. “We got to clean up. Our focus is to get ready for league.” The Cougars begin the Ocean League at home in another “Battle of the Winless” against another 0-5 squad in Santa Monica. The Vikings, who have a long history of football success, are already off to their worst start since their 0-10 1992 squad after getting blanked by last year’s Lawndale High’s football team finished its non-league record at 4-1 after rolling over Torrance 49-0 last Friday at Lawndale. Fourthyear starting senior quarterback Chris Murray continued to shine by throwing four touchdown passes and rushing for 135 yards. Bryant Perkinson caught one of Murray’s TD passes and had a 55-yard punt return for a score. Zach Cooper rushed for 100 yards and a touchdown and returned a punt 60 yards for a score. It was the Cardinals’ fourth consecutive victory that began with a home upset win over a strong CIF-Southern Section PAC Five school Encino Crespi on Sept. 11. Lawndale won its last two games by lopsided shutout scores that included a 48-0 rout of host Rolling Hills Estates Peninsula on Sept. 25. The Cardinals begin the Ocean League at Culver City Friday at 7 p.m. The Centaurs enjoyed a 3-2 non-league showing after defeating Channel Islands 54-30 last Friday in Oxnard. Morningside Remains Unbeaten; Inglewood Falls Morningside High’s football team is off to a 5-0 start after an easy 58-0 win over an undermanned Blair High team last Friday at John Muir High in Pasadena. The Monarchs hope to up its overall record to 6-0 as they begin the Bay League at Peninsula High Friday at 3 p.m. The Panthers are coming off a 28-7 win at Centennial High last Friday in Compton. Inglewood High’s football team fell to 1-4 after getting routed at home by Notre Dame High from Riverside 42-0 last Friday. Notre Dame is ranked second in the CIF-Southern Section Northwest Division. The Sentinels begin the Bay League at home against Redondo Friday at 7 p.m. The Sea Hawks had a bye week after finishing non-league at 4-1. Redondo lost its last game to Southern California power Mission Viejo 35-16 on Sept. 25 at Redondo. • PUBLIC NOTICES NOTICE OF PETITION TO ADMINISTER ESTATE OF: CONCEPCION ALVAREZ CASE NO.
