Work Out from the Middle
Duane Plank writes, “What part of
illegal is so hard for some folks to
understand?” Mister cynical misses the
main point. Yes, the parents of these DACA
children came here illegally, most to forge a
better life for them and their families. That
still means they broke the law, but not their
children, who on average were 6.5 years
old when they arrived. Beyond the obvious
humanitarian reasons to protect them
from deportation, making them leave is a
poor financial decision for our country. We
have already invested in them by way of
public education. DACA recipients are
barred from receiving government benefits.
According to the Daily Breeze, 93.3% of
DACA protectees over 25 are employed
and pay taxes. And 71.5% of them are
now in school pursuing a B.A. or advanced
degree. The President would like to see a
more merit based immigration system. I
would think many in the DACA program
would qualify. President Trump recently
tweeted, “Does anybody really want to
throw out good, educated, and accomplished
young people who have jobs, some serving
in the military?” On this I agree with
the President. Congress needs to address
immigration in a comprehensive manner.
Leaving their hard right and left corners
and working out from the middle would be
a good place to start.
