Fireworks Show
at the High School
Just a quick “Thank You” to the person and
persons responsible for the fantastic fireworks
show this past Sat at the high school. A job
well done. My wife and I have lived in El
Segundo pretty much all of our lives and
never have we seen such an amazing display
in our city. At one point during the show I
leaned over to my wife and said “this is better
than being at Disneyland” so again thank

“See Something, Say Something!” Catches
More Suspected Thieves on Main Street
In yet another example of how effective it
is when citizens report suspicious activity, a
phone call to El Segundo Police Department
(ESPD) led to the arrest of two suspected
thieves on Main Street.
On October 12, at approximately 1:54 pm,
ESPD received the call of two suspicious
men in an apartment complex’s gated
parking area in the 900 block of Main
Street. Officers detained both men to determine
if a crime was occurring. Based
upon the evidence in the garage and in the
men’s vehicle, it appeared they drove into
the garage and were trying to and/or had
siphoned gasoline from at least one parked
car in the garage. Both men were arrested
on theft related charges.
In addition to trying to steal gasoline,
the suspects may have been attempting
to open unlocked car doors to steal items
inside.
Thanks to the sharp eyes and quick
thinking of our witnesses, these two suspected
criminals learned that “See Something,
Say Something” works! One phone call
lead to their capture and stopped them from
victimizing more people.

Mankind Second Best
I love Mother Nature. I think the Saturday
creation of the 100 year anniversary celebration
of El Segundo’s founding, sponsored by
CDC, Chevron and Mattel, though not equal
to Mother Nature’s creation of the Grand
Canyon was a mankind second best.

Holding Steady for the Time Being
By Rob McCarthy
California’s healthcare exchange will raise
premiums for a second consecutive year, but
limit the 2018 increase to the silver mid-level
plans as a way to offset a possible loss of
federal assistance, it has announced.
President Trump’s threat to withhold the
federal government’s contribution toward
making health insurance affordable for
individuals and families will only affect the
silver-tiered plans for now, said Executive
Director Peter Lee for Covered California.
Silver plans will average a 12 percent price
hike next year, but could go as high as 27
percent for some policyholders who receive
financial assistance, his office said.
A surcharge on silver plans was necessary
because of the “ongoing uncertainty at the
federal level,” Lee’s office said last week. The
federal government partners with states that
created and run health insurance marketplaces-
-like Covered California--to pay some of the
premiums so that individuals and families can
comply with the Affordable Care Act. Under the
law, every child and adult must be covered by
a private or government-sponsored health plan.
The President on October 12 also signed an
executive order that allows low-cost, low-benefit
plans to be sold to individuals in compliance
with the Affordable Care Act. It was widely
reported that the President’s directive would
weaken the law and keep to his promise to “let
it die.” The consequences of the presidential
order on Californians and their health insurers
were unclear at press time.

Fire Incident at Chevron Tuesday
A reported pump failure resulted in an
explosion and subsequent fire that broke out at
the west end of the Chevron refinery Tuesday
night at 10:30 p.m. Fire department crews
quickly contained it and put out the blaze 48
minutes later. Power lines were down due to
the incident, prompting the temporary closure
of nearby Vista del Mar from Grand Avenue
to 45th Street. Chevron issued a statement, a
portion of which stated, “Chevron’s primary
concern is to ensure the safety of its employees
and the surrounding community and the environment.
Chevron is working very closely with
the local agencies to ensure that we meet those
expectations in responding to this incident,”
