Eagles from page 5
went to Ian Michael in the first quarter
to start El Segundo’s scoring. Pearson
also found Max Meidunas open for a
61-yard touchdown play. Matt Kusserow
caught two TD passes--one for seven yards
after the Eagles recovered a Beverly Hills
fumble on the Norman nine-yard line; and
the other a 15-yard touchdown pass in the
fourth quarter. Adrian Wexler added a rushing
touchdown in the first quarter to start
the Eagles’ scoring.
Girls’ Volleyball Team
The Lady Eagles lost to Culver City 18-25,
26-28, 23-25 in an evenly played match. The
second and third games were highly contested.
In the second game, Gracie Covey’s ace tied
the game at 14-14 and El Segundo went on
to win the next five points. The Lady Eagles
held a 22-20 advantage after Lexi Tecun’s
serve, but couldn’t hang on.
In the third game, poor passing and communication
led to a 16-10 deficit before El
Segundo battled back. Alyssa Pearson gave
her team a 19-18 lead and its first lead of
the game. The Lady Eagles then led 21-19,
but couldn’t close it out before dropping the
game 25-23.
El Segundo bounced back against Beverly
Hills by sweeping the Normans 25-14, 25-
17, 25-19. Maddie Kurke had 11 kills, while
Kassy McFadden and Anna Allen each had
eight assists and Malia Hui had seven assists
and three digs to lead the team.
Boys’ Water Polo
The Eagles improved to 5-0 in the Ocean
League with an emotional, hard-fought
8-7 victory over league rival Santa Monica
and an easier 15-3 win over Culver City.
The Eagles were trailing 4-2 against
Samo before some defensive adjustments
were made. The Eagles controlled the second
half and needed a last-second save by goalie
Caden Kastigar to secure the win. Kyle
Crist led the way with three goals, while
Kalan Smith had two goals and Owen Hale,
Nolan Young and Mason Jaeger each had
one goal apiece.
Against Culver City, the Eagles dominated
from the start and Cameron Dornblaser had
one of his best games of the season pounding
the net from outside to lead the scoring
for El Segundo.
The Eagles dropped a non-league matchup
with Bay League contender Palos Verdes
19-10 in a game that might have been closer
than the score indicated. Too many unforced
errors, missed wide open shots and PV’s
depth resulted in the loss that dropped the
Eagles to 18-6 overall.
El Segundo is on the road this week facing
Beverly Hills on Tuesday and then heads to
the Don Lugo Tournament on Friday and
Saturday. The Eagles wrap up their Ocean
League schedule next week on the road at
Torrance on Tuesday and at Santa Monica
next Thursday. Wins against Beverly Hills
and Torrance would not only give the Eagles
their seventh win in league play, but also
20 overall wins for the fourth consecutive
season. It would also guarantee, at the very
least, a share of the Ocean League title for
the fourth year in row. •
Freshman QB James Pearson led his team to a 35-0 win over Beverly Hills by throwing four TD passes. Matt Kusserow outruns the Beverly Hills defenders for a 15-yard touchdown.
#13 Tyler Villalobos puts a big hit on Beverly Hills’ Josh Johnson. The Eagles’ Dariush Sayson drags Beverly Hills defender Kenny Villanueva on a big gain.
Colin McEwan helped the Eagles’ defense hold Beverly Hills to 81 yards of total offense in the first half. Daniel Van Heuven returns a fumble he forced 14 yards.
