Accountability and
Transparency
Recently I visited the El Segundo Education
Foundation website to look for an itemized
breakdown of how Ed! is spending our money.
I couldn’t find it. In their most recent Annual
Report (2014-2015 is recent?) they say “For
the comprehensive list of programs and a
funding breakdown, visit our website.” It’s not
there. If Ed! is asking working families (many
who are already paying several thousand in
recently increased property taxes) to pay an
additional “$600 minimum per student,” it is
only fair they show us exactly how they are
spending this money. I think accountability
and transparency is a reasonable request in
exchange for “$600.00 minimum per student.”

What Jewelry
Means to Me
Brenda Newman, owner of The
Jewelry Source held a contest, in
which they posted the question to their
customers “Tell us what your favorite
piece of jewelry is and why”. Hundreds
of people participated and Heidi
Maerker, Herald Publications, picked
her favorite responses. The winner will
receive a $1,000 gift certificate at the
Jewelry Source. Enjoy!
THE WINNER: My favorite piece
of jewelry would have to be my “R”
ring. My father gave it to me when
I was 11. Today I am 25 and I still
wear the ring. To me, it represents a
legacy and a passing of the torch from
father to son. To me, it is meant to represent
something deeper and the joy of it
should be past down from generation to
generation. – JS
I love wearing my wedding ring,
because I designed it to look like my
father’s and it has a single diamond.
Guys need a little bling too, right?
– JW
My wedding ring. It symbolizes our
marriage and love for each other. This
precious circle of gold reflects our relationship;
love, passion, faith, respect and
an unbreakable commitment to our union
and family. Everyday my wedding ring
serves as a reminder of the vows we
pledged 25 years ago. Everyday I am
grateful for being so fortunate to be married
to my beautiful and inspirational wife
and for our two amazing children. My
wedding ring is our circle of love. – RR
My favorite piece of jewelry is a simple
bracelet made out of wooden beads,
because it was originally my best friend
Taylor’s, who was also a big role model
of mine. She passed away in a tragic car
accident a few weeks ago. It reminds
me to spread love and kindness and live
life to the fullest, just like she did. – HB
My favorite piece of jewelry is my
wedding ring. I met my wife 25 years
ago and we had a commitment ceremony
one year later. Then when gay marriage
became legal in 2008, we got legally
married. My original ring means more
to me then anything. – SS
My favorite jewelry is a gold chain that
was given to me by my late mother-inlaw,
following the death of my husband
(her son). I wanted to get my husband’s
wedding band and get it sized. She said
I should just wear it on a chain around
my neck, so she bought me a beautiful
gold chain that very rarely leaves my

neck. I, of course, did get it sized and did

wedding band, because I saved the piece
that we removed. – K.C.B.
Besides my wedding ring, my favorite
piece is the necklace Brenda helped me
design. Preserving the diamond
from my mother’s wedding ring,
along with my mother’s mothers’
diamond (my grandmother). I
wear this every day, receive many compliments,
yet more importantly, I have
memories close to my heart in a tangible
way. One day I’ll add my diamond and
pass it on. – RC-O
For my mother’s 80th birthday, I gave
her a lovely sparkling moonstone necklace
with a pendant resembling a disco ball
and she loves it. My mother is thriving
now at 84. Much of her life she has
struggled with depression, severe anxiety
and crippling shyness. She now enjoys
life and this necklace is a symbol of
the joy she now has in her final stage
of life. Thank you Brenda and The
Jewelry Source. – KB
I am on older lady and when I wear
jewelry, I feel beautiful. I buy my jewelry
from The Jewelry Source, because
they care. – RM
My father’s 1968 Rolex. I’ve worn it
for the last 15 years (before the trend).
He grew up poor, saved his Army money,
and finally treated himself to a little
luxury. As a little girl, I would love to
hear him winding the watch every night,
before bed - the sound of comfort. He
loves this watch and after begging for
11 years, I finally have it. – MC
My favorite piece of jewelry is the
eternity diamond ring with the sandblasted
rose gold bands. I love this piece, because
it make my heart sing. – KW
My favorite piece of jewelry would
have to be the gold ring my uncle made.
It is the head, body and tail of a dragon
with a ruby eye and is one of only three
in the world. My uncle is a sculptor, designed
and made the ring to give to my
father, who never took it off. My father
gave it to me, just before he died last
year. Jewelry is not only an expression
of the individual, but more importantly,
hold emotional memories and represents
moments in time. – BE
My favorite piece of is my Dad’s wedding
ring, inset with an angel, along with
my mom’s diamond, worn as a charm, o
n my bracelet. They are always with me
(my parents). – BN •
Samuel Whittaker Douglass
Samuel Whittaker Douglass
passed away peacefully on
October 18, 2017. He was
born January 2, 1931 in Paris,
Arkansas to his parents, Margaret
Cravens Brooks Douglass and
Samuel Douglass. He died in his
home in Coto De Caza with his
wife, children and grandchildren
surrounding him. In between
these two dates was a life lived
to the fullest.
Sam Douglass graduated from USC in 1958
and was an active member of Kappa Sigma
Fraternity. He married Jacquelyn Fisher, his
sweetheart, after graduation and worked for
his folks at the El Segundo Douglass Family
Mortuary. He later became President and
bought five more mortuaries, helping families
in the El Segundo, Paramount, Hawthorne,
Lynwood and Southgate areas and beyond.
In fact, he helped the families all around
the world when he was asked to handle arrangements
for those that tragically died in
56 different airline accidents. He mourned
each loved one as if they were his own with
incredible compassion and kindness.
He was actively engaged with the community,
his friends and his family. He believed
in service to others which included President
of the Hawthorne Community Hospital, Chairman
of the Robert F Kennedy Medical Center
Foundation, President of Los Angeles County
Funeral Directors Association, Chairman of
20th Century Round Table, President of El
Segundo Kiwanis Club and the President of the
South Bay Trojan Club. He was a founding
member of El Segundo First National Bank
(now Citizens Business Bank), served on the
board of directors of the El Segundo Education
Foundation and was even the El Segundo
Little League Baseball Commissioner. He was
appointed to the Los Angeles Mayor’s Emergency
Committee. He served on the board of
the Centinela Valley YMCA and was also a
member of Round Table of Orange County,
El Segundo Chamber of Commerce, Ferrari
Owners Club, and the Southwest Region of
the Ferrari Club of America.
Sam loved his family, friends
and fun. He went on annual
fishing trips to Mexico with his
brothers from Kappa Sigma. He
took his family on many fishing
trips on his beloved boat, “The
Happy Hooker”. He loved to fish
and duck hunt. He golfed with his
fraternity brothers every week up
until he passed. He snow skied.
He raced cars, including his own
three Ferraris. Fun traditions were
something very important to Sam, which included
the Long Beach Grand Prix, where he
attended every year since it’s inception in 1973.
The biggest tradition that he held was for USC
Football. He attended every home game with his
entire family as it grew to three generations. He
made numerous trips to San Francisco, South
Bend and across the country to see the Trojans
play. He hosted the ever popular, Douglass
Trojan Tailgate party for family and friends in
the same location for over 30 years. Perhaps the
most cherished tradition was family Christmas
Eve dinner after church at either Lawry’s and
later, The Five Crowns with his clan.
He was married to his wife of 59 years,
Jacquelyn Fisher Douglass, lovingly known
as Jacque. Together they had four children,
Heather Douglass Keller, Brooks Douglass,
Erin Douglass King and Sean Douglass. His
children brought him nine grandchildren,
Alyson, Preston, Chase, Brennan, Brooks
Jr., Cameron, Braden, Paige and Spencer. He
loved and supported each, no matter what
their passion. He attended virtually every
game, production, ceremony and event of
theirs. Samuel Douglass was a funny, witty,
kind and loving man that positively touched
everyone he met. He is loved deeply by his
family who all consider him their hero and
inspiration. We will miss him greatly. In lieu
of flowers the family is asking for donations
