Eagles from page 5
Arman Sayson, who gained 118 yards against Santa Monica, picks up 29 yards on this play.
Fenton led the Eagles and finished a close
second in 16:43. Sophomores Ryan Hoerner
and Elliott Bijlsma finished fourth and sixth
respectively. Garrett Rifkin and Arend Verfallie
finished in the top 10, while Calvin Lang
and Benjamin Kooper ran well and should be
ready for the CIF Prelims set for Saturday
at the Riverside City Cross Country Course.
The girls’ team had all seven members
finish in the top 13 runners to win the Ocean
League title. Nicole Fulcomer led the Lady
Eagles by placing third (19:50), while Sophia
Zago was fourth (19:51), James Matlosz fifth
(20:17), Gabby Lee sixth (20:30), Alyana
Verfallie eighth (20:46), Grace Hoffman 11th
and Kate Johnson 13th. The Lady Eagles will
compete at the CIF prelims on Saturday at
the Riverside City Cross Country Course.
Romero Leads Eagles Over
Santa Monica and Into Playoffs
The Eagles finished the regular season 8-2
with their 40-6 win over Santa Monica. Matt
Romero led the Eagles’ offense by scoring
three rushing touchdowns. He opened the
scoring in the first quarter with a keeper from
one yard out. He scored on a five-yard run
and one-yard plunge that was set up when
Ben Rosas recovered a fumble late in the
second quarter.
Sophomore sensation Arman Sayson gained
a game-high 118 yards rushing with a fouryard
TD run. Arman’s brother Dar Sayson
followed the line play of Jess Caravello,
Gunnar Rogers and Justin Delgado to score
on a three-yard TD run. Danny McEntee
scored his eighth rushing touchdown of the
season on a seven-yard run with 36 seconds
remaining in the first half.
The defense was stellar for the first three
quarters and most of the fourth quarter.
Santa Monica gained just 98 total yards of
offense. The Vikings picked up 34 yards in
their final possession of the game to get into
the end zone.
The Eagles face second-seeded El Modena
tonight in the opening round of the CIF
Southern Section Division 7 playoffs. Tonight’s
rare Thursday night game starts at 7
p.m. El Modena High School is located at
3920 Spring Street, Orange. •
brilliantly to lead the way. Hale led all
scorers with six goals, while Crist had five
goals. Hale started strong, putting away the
team’s first goal on an outside shot with
an incredible spin lob that is similar to a
screwball in baseball. The entire team battled
hard and played solidly over four quarters.
Mason Jaeger added two goals, while Kalan
Smith had one goal in the second half. Caden
Kastigar was badgered throughout and had
seven saves in goal.
The Eagles’ momentum in the first round
started to carry over in the second round
against top-seeded Ayala High School. With
confidence on their side, the Eagles jumped
out to an early 2-1 lead by the end of the first
quarter behind goals from Crist and Hale. The
second quarter went back and forth and it was
tied 5-5 heading into the second half. In the
third quarter the teams battled, but the Eagles
fell behind 9-7. Perhaps the turning point came
when El Segundo had an advantage power
play, but failed to score. The Eagles turned
the ball over and Ayala went on to score. In
the final period the teams traded goals, but
the Eagles couldn’t capitalize on a couple
key opportunities and ultimately lost 11-9.
Coach Riley Brady was philosophical
afterwards. “It was a great run, but I know
by the emotion after the game that none of
the players or coaches were ready for the
season to end,” he said. “We have a young
squad that will certainly develop over the
next couple years.”
The Eagles have just two seniors who have
been with the varsity for four years. Nolan
Young and Kyle Crist will have bright futures
ahead of them, according to Coach
Brady. “Nolan Young has never gotten a grade
lower than an A in his entire academic career
and will certainly represent our program and
school well as he moves on,” Brady said.
“Kyle just placed sixth out of 250 applicants
on the LA County Fire Department Ocean
Lifeguard swim test.”
Boys’ and Girls’ Cross Country
Teams Win Ocean League Titles
Both boys’ and girls’ cross country squads
swept to Ocean League titles at the challenging
Kenneth Hahn State Park’s course. Noah
The Eagles gained 258 yards on the ground thanks to #52 Jess Caravello, #55 Gunnar Rogers and #67 Justin Delgado.
