What Happens When You Combine
a Pumpkin With a Good Book
Richmond Street Elementary School held
its first Literacy O’Lantern Contest in which
families had the chance to create a book
character on a pumpkin or gourd. Forty-seven
students and four staff members turned in
fabulously creative lanterns, from Harry Potter,
Pinkalicious, Captain Underpants, Where the
Wild Things Are, Pete the Cat, and a slew of
favorite characters. Mrs. Haun, Richmond’s
Reading Specialist, was the event coordinator.
At the October 30 staff meeting, teachers
voted on their favorite three choices. Top
votes resulted in two kindergarten winners:
Zoe Haberman with her “The Day the Crayons
Came Home” and Kaitlyn Strom with “Don’t
Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus.” The winners
proudly marched as the “Parade Marshals,”
leading the school’s annual Halloween parade.
When asked about the experience, Zoe shared,
“I looked in a book and I decided I wanted
that book, so my mom bought the crayons.
I drawed the faces and my mom hot-glued
them on. My favorite crayon was Glow in the
Dark Crayon.” Kaitlyn shared, “I really like
that book. It’s silly. I really like that particular
character. It’s very funny and thought it would
be a good hit!” She added that her dad painted
the blue parts and she painted all the white and
black parts and the collar made out of a cup.
The top staff member pick was second
grade teacher Mrs. Gilbert with her “BFG”
creation. For more pictures, visit Photo Albums
