The City’s pension liability. What should
we do?
MB: I am more inclined to focus on creative
ways to generate income for the city without
taking services away from residents. Measure
C will help us lower our pension liability.
On dealing with LAX growth and your
thoughts about the City’s relationship and
recent agreement with LAWA:
MB: There seems to be more noise now
than ever and the residential sound insulation
program ran out of funds so my home
did not receive the sound proofing windows
as promised.
Is the City properly handling its relationships
with companies/agencies that impact
the community such as Chevron, DWP,
Hyperion and the City of LA?
MB: The City should continue doing its
best managing good relations with these
neighboring agencies. Chevron has been
a great partner to the City, and I will do
everything I can to maintain and build upon
that relationship. We must continue monitoring
the odors and noise from Hyperion, the
construction at Scattergood, and growth at
LAWA.
Should the Council make decisions that
maximize improving the environment even
if it means spending more money?
MB: I think we should start putting away
funds for this initiative. The environmental
agencies will likely put requirements on cities
and we need to have the funds available
to support it.
On City financial and/or in-kind support
of El Segundo Unified School District
and your opinion of the current joint-use
agreement and arrangement regarding the
new aquatics facility:
MB: I think this will be a well-used
aquatic facility for the entire South Bay.
I just hope we can capitalize on it. Competitive
swim meets will bring more business
into El Segundo and generate revenue. I
will need to see the expenses against income
report in order to make a logical decision
on this.
What is one item we didn’t ask about
that you feel is important to address?
MB: Keeping El Segundo safe: It is
important to remember that no matter how
attractive, business-friendly, educated, healthy
and successful a city is, it only takes one
tragedy to destroy a city’s reputation. We
must keep El Segundo safe first and do
everything we can to remain safe.
Tell us something about yourself that
people may be surprised to know:
MB: I was born in a small town in Sweden
and my husband was born in Iowa. We both
recall growing up in a town that was safe,
friendly, healthy, active and valued education.
El Segundo reminds us of our childhood. •
