Politically Speaking
Robert Mueller’s Investigation Is
Proving to Be No Witch Hunt
By Cristian Vasquez
With the recent indictment of 13 Russian
nationals by Special Counsel Robert Mueller,
it is reasonable to say that his investigative
efforts are not a witch hunt or political hit
job. In addition to the 13 being charged with
interfering with the 2016 presidential election,
Mueller charged three of the defendants with
conspiracy to commit wire fraud and bank
fraud, and five defendants with aggravated
identity theft. With that being said, a witch
hunt wouldn’t produce this much evidence
of wrongdoing. While Democrats and overall
President Trump opponents are gleeful at
Mueller’s findings and hopeful that this links
the President to Russian nationals in an effort
to steal the election, the truth is the investigation
isn’t quite there yet. More importantly,
it might never get to that point.
Without a doubt that having a sitting
president accused of conspiring with foreign
agents to win an election for personal gain
on the international level makes for sensational
headlines, the reality is that this whole
Russian-meddling effort could have happened
without President Trump being involved. Yes,
there are plenty of red flags so far: People
close to the President’s campaign having
Russian ties, the President’s refusal to ever
say a negative word about Russian President
Vladimir Putin, etc…but there is a strong
likelihood that President Trump had nothing
to do with the election meddling.
Having said that, Mueller’s investigation is
proving to be more important than we could
have imagined when it was launched. President
Trump’s involvement, or lack thereof, should
not take away our attention from the fact that
a foreign power had the ability to meddle,
interfere and/or disrupt our election. Whether
it was Russian-bots spreading misinformation
on social media, or the 13 newly-indicted individuals
charged by Mueller, our election was
tampered with -- and that alone is cause for
concern, anger and frustration. In all honesty,
it’s not a surprise. This country’s politics have
become so susceptible to money from special
interest groups (e.g. NRA, Pharmaceutical
Lobby, the aerospace industry), that having
outsiders interested in banking on our election
is not surprising. Neither is the fact that
some money-chasing Americans allow for
this interference to occur.
Again, so far nothing has come out that proves
President Trump’s involvement or support for
such actions, but the interference in our election
did take place. No matter what political leanings
any of us might have, and regardless of
the outcome of the election, this is upsetting.
Money has become such a central point to
placing politicians in office that we’ve become
vulnerable to outside interference. Maybe this
isn’t new to our electoral system. In a world
where everything is possible, then there is a
likelihood this has happened before but there
wasn’t a special counselor looking into things.
For now, it’s somewhat comforting knowing
that the man who oversaw the investigations
of Manuel Noriega and the convicted leader of
the Gambino crime family John Gotti, among
other accomplishments, continues to look into
this election interference. •
Global Warming? Not so Much
Recently, as Gun Talk Escalates
By Duane Plank
Didn’t hear much from the global warming/
climate change proponents as the temps in our
neck of the woods dropped into the mid-30s
last week. Guess they are, shockingly, on to
another resist crusade, hoping to pocket the
2018 mid-term elections and try to impeach
President Trump, espousing scant ideas of
their own.
Apparently more than two dozen Dems
are eyeing a run at the presidency in 2020.
And why not, with this tumultuous political
environment fueled by over-the-liners on both
sides of the media, as the 24-hour news cycle
continues to churn and won’t slow down as
we approach November?
All well and good. Just wish a partisan skow
like the hag Joy Behar, point-gal on the girl-talk
show The View, would stick to opining on what
she may have a little knowledge about -- like
the latest escapades of the money-for-anything
embarrassment to America, the Kardashians.
And not putting down our esteemed Vice
President Mike Pence, who if Nancy “Fancy
Pants” Pelosi has her way, could end up being
president if the Dems can conjure up a
scenario to impeach and oust our duly-elected
commander-in-chief.
The blood-stained battle over guns continues.
After the massacres at Columbine, Sandy
Hook, the Pulse nightclub and in Vegas, it was
posited that we need to do something to stop
this carnage. And, as is typical in America,
and most Americans who seem to have the
attention span of a gnat, we moved on to
some other cause.
When the pervert Harvey Weinstein fell in
love with a potted plant and took advantage
of ladies, sexual harassment became the soup
du jour. The media went on a rampage and
some of their brethren, miscreants or just folks
caught up in the maelstrom, also took a fall,
so help me, Matt Lauer.
On to the gun issue after the slaughter in
Florida: At least it was comforting to know
that the high school had an armed guard, according
to reports, who made 100k a year and
stood outside the carnage, doing absolutely
nothing for whatever reason.
Now, I will not judge the armed gentleman,
making a reported 100k a year, who has since
retired, who did not enter the fray as a lunatic
shot innocent kids, teachers and coaches. I
have never owned a gun, shot a gun, or signed
up for all the perks that an NRA membership
may give to a guy like me. But we must do
something to protect our kids, right?
Bipartisanship is needed. Bleep the NRA
on their staunch stance that we should all be
able to arm ourselves with AR-15s to protect
ourselves from…whatever. But we also need
to heed the 2nd Amendment, allowing upright
citizens to tote a gun. I guess.
So how about this? Bump up the timeframe
when you can buy a murderous weapon, say,
until you are 21. Like when you can buy a
beer. And put more money into dealing with
the mental health problems of someone like
the obviously troubled Florida assassin.
It is not a right or left issue. It is a matter
of doing the right thing. Before more children
don’t return home after the dismissal bell rings. •
