Eagles’ Comeback Against
South Torrance Impressive
The El Segundo Eagles baseball team got
its wish to play better competition. It came
from seven runs down to defeat South Torrance
9-8 in the second game of the Redondo
Tournament.
After beating up on Beverly Hills, Hart
and Hawthorne by combined scores of 59-6
in five games, it was a welcome relief to
play some competition in South Torrance.
The Spartans got to Eagle starter Cooper
Sutherland early by scoring three runs on
four hits and two El Segundo errors. In the
second inning, Cade Barger’s two-run single
extended South’s lead to 5-0. Barger’s fifth
inning home run gave the Spartans a 7-0 lead.
The Eagles batted around and sent 11 batters
to the plate in the fifth inning when they
scored seven runs to tie the game. Bailey
Davis’ RBI single made it 7-1 and Ethan
Burner scored on a fielder’s choice to cut
the deficit to 7-2. Later in the inning, Ian
Bonham’s two-run double made it 7-6 and
Brendan McAndrews’ RBI single completed
the comeback to tie the game. In the sixth
inning, the Spartans took an 8-7 lead when
Andre Sugden closed out the game for the Cardinals.
Sho Matono walked and later scored on a
sacrifice fly.
In the bottom of the seventh inning the
Eagles took advantage of an error, an appeal
play and an infield hit that took a wild
bounce to win the game. Dylan Marquez-
Wasson reached on an error when the first
baseman pulled his foot and the play was
successfully appealed. With David Brady
running for Marquez-Wasson, he advanced
on a sacrifice bunt and scored on Julian
Rodriquez’s RBI single to tie the game at
8-8. Ian Bonham doubled off the centerfield
fence and ended up scoring the winning run
on a bizarre infield hit. McAndrews hit a ball
off the pitcher’s leg that caromed between
the first and second baseman. There was no
play at first base on McAndrews and Bonham
came around and scored on the infield hit.
The Eagles’ improbable win boosted their
overall record to 9-4 entering this week when
they faced Bishop Montgomery on Monday
and Palos Verdes today.
